Ravi Kant ‘wants to surrender’
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, September 15
Rubbishing claims of the Delhi police regarding suspended IG Ravi Kant Sharma having fled to Nepal, his family said he was in the country and wanted to surrender before the court.

“He knows he has no option. He is himself an IPS officer and will not run away from the law. But the Delhi police has created such circumstances that he cannot surrender,” said his daughter, Ms Komal Sharma.

She said the Delhi police had tapped their phones, those of their friends and family members, and even Ravi Kant’s lawyers. “This is preventing my father from getting in touch with his lawyers, in order to discuss the next course of action. The police has made it a prestige issue to arrest him, and laid siege at the courts, our house and even at houses of our relatives. Thus he cannot surrender,” she said.

“We are being hounded by Delhi police cops. During our stay at my maternal aunt’s house in Delhi recently, the cops searched their house five times. ACP Upadhayay came with 30 cops at their house and accused her of giving infrastructural support” to Ravi Kant’s family ( that means us). “Even now cops have been deployed outside her residence on a permanent basis,” she alleged.

When asked if they would approach the Apex Court after the Delhi High Court rejected Ravi Kant’s bail application, she said that they would decide only after they received a certified copy of the court order and then consulted their lawyers.

She said though Ravi Kant had not got in touch with them or his lawyer since August 17, he had always expressed his desire to surrender and face trial after exploring legal options before him.

Government insensitive to farmers: Congress
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 15
Even as paddy procurement by official agencies is slated to start from October 1, the minimum support price (MSP) of the grain is yet to be announced. The delay has made the official circles of Haryana worried while the Opposition is using the opportunity to direct attack against the state government for being “insensitive to farmers”.

“The MSP must be announced immediately”, said Mr Ajay Singh Yadav, Congress party’s Deputy Leader in the Assembly, who also added that the MSP must be substantially increased to compensate farmers for the additional expenditure on inputs incurred on account of drought.

Earlier, in May, the Haryana government had sought Rs 690 per quintal as MSP for the grade A variety of paddy. However, it has been made a practice by various state governments to seek the MSP much in excess of what is likely to be announced by the Centre. Last year Haryana had sought Rs 670 per quintal for the grade A variety while the MSP finally announced by the Centre was Rs 560 for the grade A variety and Rs 530 for per quintal of common paddy.

This time round the farmers also had to bear additional cost because of the dry weather which necessitated more consumption of diesel, expenses on account of labour cost for boring tubewells further to have access to the depleting ground water level, etc.

However, the Agriculture Cost and Prices Commission has reportedly refused to increase the MSP. The Union Agriculture Ministry, headed by Mr Ajit Singh, it is learnt, has requested the ACCP to reconsider the recommendations made by it to the Centre regarding the MSP.

Significantly, when Mr Parkash Singh Badal was Chief Minister of Punjab, Haryana and Punjab had always made concerted moves on issues related to farmers. This used to yield good results as the coalition regime in Delhi could not ignore pressure mounted by the partners. However, with the Congress taking over the reins in Punjab, initiative for joint action on the issue of MSP does not seem to be on the cards.

DC’s action saves MC from losses
Our Correspondent

Kurukshetra, September 15
The Municipal Committee, Thanesar, would have suffered losses worth lakhs of rupees had the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Abhilaksh Likhi not intervened and cancelled the auction of debris and other waste material and the octroi rooms of the committee last week.

This aspect came to light when the three octroi rooms were auctioned again for a rent of Rs 12,750 per month against the earlier rent of Rs 925 at the August 20 auction allegedly in connivance with municipal committee officials.

The auction was conducted again under the supervision of the City Magistrate, Ms Hema Sharma, who represented the Deputy Commissioner.

But in the absence of the Deputy Commissioner’s representative the debris’ auction on May 22, the maximum bid was reportedly Rs 3 lakh. The same debris were auctioned in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner’s representative on May 29 for more than Rs 6 lakh.

The audit branch had already objected to the earlier auction. Mr Likhi also constituted a three-member committee, headed by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Dr Narhari Singh Bangar, in this regard.

Mr Likhi has also recommended action against those found guilty.

Meanwhile, Mr Likhi has also forwarded the report on the poor construction of a drain on the Amin road here to the Commissioner and Secretary, Local Bodies Department, Haryana. He has also urged the higher authorities concerned that the construction of the four-laning on the Railway road here should be assigned to another agency than the Municipal Committee, Thanesar.
