Gurdaspur, July 13
Commissioner (Jalandhar Division) SR Ladhar visited the town today to conduct an inquiry into the sequence of events that led to the death of a Sikh youth --- Jaspal Singh ---allegedly in a police firing on March 29 following which curfew was imposed in the town.

Two separate inquiries have been initiated by the state government into the incident. One inquiry is being conducted by DIG (Border range) while the second probe is being conducted by the Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner.

Relatives of Jaspal Singh have boycotted the probe being held by the DIG claiming that it was “partial”. However, they have reposed faith in the investigations being conducted by the Commissioner.

Ladher, accompanied by Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhinav Trikha, inspected the site near Gurdwara Ramgharia where the police opened fire to disperse an unruly mob of Sikhs. It is pertinent to mention here that Jaspal was killed after a bullet pierced his body.

The incident had led to serious repercussions when the youth’s kin, led by Akal Takht Jatehdar Gurbachan Singh, refused to cremate the body. Under pressure from a section of the Sikh clergy, the state government had suspended the then SSP Varinder Pal Singh. Deputy Commissioner Mohinder Singh Kainth was also transferred to Chandigarh. It was only after the government ordered these transfers that the relatives of Jaspal Singh relented following which the body was cremated.

Ladhar took the statements of all the 28 policemen who were present during the firing. He has also asked the police department to give him a list of weapons which were possessed by these policemen at the time of the incident.

Sources in the department said the senior medical officer (SMO), Mukerian, collected samples of potable water from the hostel mess, but food samples were not taken.

Swinging into action soon after the incident was highlighted by the Tribune in these columns on Friday morning, the CS directed the SMO to visit the nursing institute and collect samples of water and other eatables. The SMO was also asked to interact with the ailing nursing students and the institute management and submit a preliminary report to him by this evening.

Talking to the Tribune, the CS claims to have received reports from the SMO in which he found that the hospitalised nursing students were recovering fast. Action will be initiated against the institute management only on the report of the DHO, he claimed.
