It was not less than a nightmare for those who were injured in a road accident near Jagraon today. A police official died on the spot while eight others were injured when a police Jeep they were travelling in collided head-on with a speeding private bus coming from the opposite direction.

Police to auction vehicles with no claimants
Ludhiana, July 13
The efforts of the Ludhiana police over the past one year have borne fruit. After getting the details, data and permission by the respective courts, the police is soon going to auction 697 vehicles that have no "legal claimants". The revenue generated through the action will be deposited with the state exchequer.

Cycle industry gets a fillip

Tenders from the neighbouring states have lifted the spirits of the ailing local cycle and cycle parts industry. The industry will be busy for the next three-four months in completing the orders it has received from the neighbouring states.

After vowing to eliminate the menace of drug addiction, which has destroyed the lives of several youths in the area, the Jagraon police has tightened its noose around those involved in peddling of drugs like heroin, smack, charas, opium, poppy husk and other habit-forming substances.

One patient from Jalandhar tests positive 
Ludhiana, July 13
A suspected dengue patient from Jalandhar, who is under treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital since yesterday, has tested positive. Confirming this, district epidemiologist Dr Anil Verma said, "The 23-year-old patient, Dushyant Kumar, from Jalandhar has tested positive."

Money order through SMS planned
Ludhiana, July 13
BSNL and India Post have tied-up to offer money order service using mobile phones. According to an official, the receiver of the money would get an SMS for the transaction and could get the cash from post office by showing the message. The new project is at the planning stage and would be introduced after conducting a pilot in August or September this year. The pilot project is expected to be carried out in Punjab, Kerala, Bihar, and Delhi circles, he said.

Health officials destroy uncovered eatables
Ludhiana, July 13
To prevent spread of diseases during the monsoon, a team of health department destroyed uncovered eatables and rotten fruits and vegetables at various spots in the city on Thursday. The team checked the shops of eatables and fruits at the bus stand, Jawahar Nagar Camp, Kochhar Market, Bharat Nagar Chowk, etc. on the directions of the Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, Dr Subhash Batta.

Fashion designing has become a favourite course among rural students too who have started showing interest in the subject. Some are studying it as an additional subject others are studying it as a full-fledged subject. Many city colleges have also introduced B.Sc in fashion designing, which has been well received by the students.

Judicial Magistrate Vikrant Kumar has convicted four brothers and one another for carving out illegal colony without the permission of PUDA. They have been ordered to undergo two years imprisonment each.

Police set to launch eight MSVs for effective policing
Ludhiana, July 13
The city police is all set to launch nearly eight mobile surveillance vans (MSV) for effective policing. Equipped with close circuit television (CCTV) camera that will be directly linked with the control room through high- speed Internet, these vans will be deployed at all major roundabouts and popular market places of the city and it will provide live telecast to the police officials sitting in the control room.

The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation officials finally woke from their slumber and repaired the portion of the road that had caved in in the Bal Singh Nagar area of Basti Jodhewal around 10 days ago. After the road caved in, the MC officials kept sleeping over it, putting lives of area residents in danger.

LIT adopts proposal for additional parking space
Ludhiana, July 13
Hours before the state government dissolved all 28 improvement Trusts in the state on Wednesday, the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) adopted a proposal to provide additional parking space in the proposed 8.8-acre multi-storey housing complex, the Atal Apartments, to be constructed at the Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar on the Pakhowal road here.

The fear of inviting misfortune by axing banyan trees is costing the municipal corporation (MC) dear. GADVASU professor’s research praised

Costs for 7 months pending

It is a tough time for teachers of government schools, which have not been receiving the cost to run the midday meal scheme. The government had released funds in April, 2012, for pending cooking costs till December, 2011. The costs for seven months was still pending.

No excitement about Olympics
Ludhiana, July 13
With the London Olympics due to start in a few days from now, little excitement is being seen in markets and among youngsters in the city. Sports experts say this can be attributed to the lack of sports culture in the city and not much being done by the government for sports.
