New Delhi, July 13
Traffic was at a standstill in many areas due to waterlogging after showers lashed the national capital yet another day today.

The day was clear, but in the evening heavy showers started slowing down traffic on major stretches near ITO, India Gate, South Extension, Vikas Marg, among others.

A civic agency official said that waterlogging was reported from several other areas, including Laxmi Nagar, Parliament Street, Jangpura, Ashram, etc. There were similar reports from Lajpat Rai Market, Defence Colony flyover, Moolchand flyover and at various places on Ring Road.

The civic agencies always claim that drains are desilted before the beginning of the monsoon. But the waterlogging that happens on major roads when it rains does not justify their claim, said a man who was caught in a traffic jam at ITO.

Another man covered Minto Road to ITO in 30 minutes. Normally, it takes just 5 minutes to cover the distance. He said that the authorities concerned have totally failed to solve the problem of waterlogging.

The Capital received an average of 0.4 mm of rains for the past nine hours ending at 5:30 pm, the MeT office said, adding that showers occurred in the later part of the evening.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 27.4 deg C, one degree above normal, while the maximum was recorded at 36.2 deg C, one degree above normal.

The humidity oscillated between 58 and 92 per cent.

The Capital has been receiving monsoon rains for the past four days.

Monsoon missed the normal date of June 29. Last year, it reached the city on June 26.

Oppn opposes sale of RSS literature at Civic Centre
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 13
The members of the opposition in the North and South Delhi Municipal Corporations today objected to the alleged selling of magazines and literature of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak (RSS) in the SP Mukherjee Civic Centre.

The Saffron group of the BJP had put up a stall near the meeting hall on the second floor of the A-wing of civic centre which accommodates the office of the NDMC.

The stall had been set up to sell the subscription of RSS magazine "Panchjanya" and other literature having objectionable content based on communal lines, said Farhad Suri, leader of the opposition in the SDMC.

Justifying the presence of the RSS stall in the MCD headquarters, NDMC Mayor Meera Aggrawal said, "The RSS is just a group and it does not harm if they showcasing something like this".

"Tomorrow if protesters from Jammu and Kashmir come to campaign in the building, will they allow them also. Who is the competent authority in the MCD to give such permissions?" Asked Suri.

The leaders of the opposition of the two corporations have written to the commissioner of the NDMC to investigate the matter and lodge an FIR against the officials who permitted such an activity on the MCD premises.

"We all know that carrying out any such commercial or political activity in a government building is prohibited. We want to know as to who has allowed the RSS to set up their camp in the MCD building," said Mukesh Goel, leader of the opposition in the NDMC.

Holding BJP, the party in majority, responsible for allowing the RSS to use the MCD office for selling their write-ups, Congress leaders said that it was an attempt to "Saffaronise the Corporation". They said that the matter would be taken to the Lieutenant Governor in order to book the guilty. They have called one-day dharna to protest against the RSS.
