NDMC plans to collect tax from multiplexes
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 12
Struggling to increase its revenue collection, the newly formed North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) is planning to impose entertainment tax on all multiplexes falling under its jurisdiction, leading to a possibility of an increase in the rate of movie tickets.

The Leader of House in NDMC, Mahender Nagpal said that collecting tax from the multiplexes will be an important source of revenue for the civic body.

Nagpal also demanded that some percentage of the entertainment tax collected by the government from cinema halls in the city should be given to municipal corporations.

"We can levy some tax on the sale of movie tickets in multiplexes that would come directly to the corporations," said Nagpal at a special meeting to review the financial condition of NDMC.

Stating the examples of Haryana and UP where entertainment tax goes to the local bodies, he said that in Delhi the tax is collected by the government. Discussions with the other corporations can be initiated on the matter, he added.

However, the modalities of the new tax have not been formulated yet.
