New Delhi, July 9 A passerby informed the police control room (PCR) about the incident. The police found Rikshpal lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The police believes that robbery was not the motive behind the murder, as Rs 9,000 cash and his mobile phone were found in his pocket. A case of murder has been registered at the Mahendra Park police station. The police is investigating the matter from the angles of personal enmity and business rivalry. Rikshpal's son reportedly said that a few months ago, his brother was attacked and robbed by some rivals in the village. The family is suspecting the involvement of the same persons behind the murder. In the second murder that was reported from Daryaganj last night, a 28-year-old worker at a Delhi Metro construction site near ITO was robbed and stabbed by unidentified persons. The incident occurred at 10 pm. The victim has been identified as Ranjeet Shah, a native of Samastipur district in Bihar. Shah had gone to recharge his mobile phone at the Daryaganj market and was returning to his work place when he was stopped by the assailants. They stabbed Shah in his abdomen when he resisted their robbery attempt. He was rushed to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. He died due to excessive bleeding. The police has detained one person, who will be questioned about the
incident. |
Bus crushes 12-yr-old cyclist
New Delhi, July 9 The cyclist has been identified as Sachin, who lived on the premises of the Sacred Heart Cathedral at Gol Dak Khana. He was cycling towards CP when the accident took place at 10.20 pm. When Sachin reached near the DLF-NDMCparking lot at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, a speeding bus rammed into him. The 50-year-old driver of the bus named Yashpal was caught by locals and handed over to the police. He hails from the Muzaffarnagar district in UP. A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered against him at the CP police station. Sachin's body was given to his family. In the second accident, three persons, including two women, sustained minor injuries in a collision between a car and a tempo at Ferozshah Road on Sunday evening around 7.45 pm. The medical examination of the drivers of the vehicles has revealed that the driver of the car, a Maruti Swift Dzire, Rakesh Kumar was under the influence of alcohol. He was accompanied by two women-- Kriti and Priyanka. The driver of the tempo, James Jessi, has told the police that he was going from Panchkuian Road to Sewa Nagar with his brother-in-law Shankar Lal when the accident took place. Shankar, Kriti and Priyanka suffered minor injuries. A case of rash and drunken driving has been lodged against Rakesh at the Parliament Street police station. He is a resident of

New Delhi, July 9 Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Chhaya Sharma said that the accused have been identified as Laxman (36), Satish (37) and Paras (47). They have been arrested on charges of killing Ranjita, alias Gita (50), on April 27. Sharma said that Ranjita was the head of a "dera" at Majnu Ka Tilla. "The accused also killed her close confidante Sharmila on May 7. They had burnt both the bodies by pouring petrol and dumped them in remote areas to avoid identification," added the official. During the interrogation, Satish and Paras confessed to killing Ranjita at Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan and Sharmila at Majnu Ka Tilla. They said that Laxman had hatched the murder conspiracy. He was thereafter
arrested. |
Bomb scare at SC
New Delhi, July 9 A police contingent from the Tilak Marg police station, which is located near the SC, reached there within a couple of minutes. Later, a bomb squad and a dog unit also arrived there, but security officials did not find a bomb. Since it was a Sunday, not many people were present at the SC. A case under Section 182 (false information, with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to the injury of another person) of the IPC has been registered at the Tilak Marg police station. The police is yet to make arrests in the case. "We will trace the phone number of the accused," said the official. |

Rain brings mercury down
New Delhi, July 9 The monsoon, which missed its date on June 29, left the city residents in discomfort due to humid conditions following the first rains. Given the delayed rains, the city is running short of 49 per cent of rainfall than the normal with the season's total remaining at 55.9 mm till late evening today. As per the IMD records, last year the capital had received 123.8 mm rains until June end vis-ŕ-vis 45.3 mm till the first week of July. Weather officials are still to conclude if the city will get normal rainfall this time slated to be 645.7 mm. Meanwhile, until evening today, the weather department had gauged varying amounts of rains, with around 4 mm at Safdarjung Airport, 6 mm at Lodhi Road along with drizzle in certain areas recorded in decimals around Palam that have resulted in a dip in the mercury levels. The maximum temperature today registered a three degrees departure from the season's average at 33.9° C, while the minimum temperature stood normal at 28° C, nearly two notches up from yesterday's 26.4° C. For tomorrow, the weatherman predicts a similar weather with a partly cloudy sky and one or two spells of rainfall and the temperatures are expected to oscillate between 33° and 26° C. |
EDMC aims at 27% hike in property tax collection
New Delhi, July 9 However, all that the MCD managed to register against the targeted amount was Rs 763.73 crore only. "Of Rs 763.73 crore, a total of Rs 240 crore was collected from the east Delhi areas. While for the current fiscal year, the estimated revenue from the property tax for the EDMC has been increased to Rs 335.50 crore, an increase of 27 per cent," said Mehak Singh, chairman of the Standing Committee. He said that it could be accomplished only after bringing more and more people under tax net. The property tax comprises the main source of income for any municipal corporation as it contributes more than 20 per cent to its revenue. Delhi has a total of 38 lakh properties, approximately, while the ones paying their annual property tax are only between 10 and 11 lakhs. "The civic agencies get tax from only 30 per cent of the total properties as the rest 70 per cent are outside the tax ambit,"
said Singh. |
