Youth stabbed to death by wife’s brothers for honour
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 5
In a suspected case of honour killing, a 21-year-old youth was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife's brothers at Mangolpuri this morning.

Jyoti's two brothers, Gaurav and Rahul, have been arrested. The police is looking for the third brother.

The deceased, Ranvir, had married Jyoti against the wishes of their families. This led to bitter enmity between Rajesh's and his wife's families.

According to the police, at 9.30 am today, Jyoti's brothers, Gaurav and Rahul, came to Ranvir's house at Mangolpuri to talk to him. They took him to a nearby park, where Jyoti's third brother was waiting. They allegedly stabbed him to death with a knife.

Jyoti was not present at the time of the incident and Ranvir's sister received the brothers at the residence. The police has recorded the statement of Ranvir's sister and is investigating the matter.

The couple wedded on April 10 at the Arya Samaj temple. They reportedly faced a threat from their families. The couple had approached the Delhi High Court to seek protection. The court took a written statement from both the families that they would not interfere in the lives of the couple.

Ranvir was pursuing his education from a private college in Madhya Pradesh. He met Jyoti in school and since then they had been together.

Court allows all vehicles on BRT corridor
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, July 5
The Delhi High Court today directed the city government to allow all types of vehicles to ply on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand till further orders.

A Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice AK Sikri and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw also asked the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) to expedite its study and file report by July 12.

The CRRI had conducted the study by allowing all vehicles to use the corridor from May 12 to 23. The corridor, constructed only for the buses, had resulted in huge traffic snarls on the adjoining road meant for other vehicles.

Following this, an NGO, Nyay Bhoomi, moved the HC, pleading that the corridor project should be scrapped.

In its interim report, the CRRI has said that no traffic jam was seen during the trial run. "The concept has received an excellent response from the travelling public as well as the media," the report said.

The NGO said the traffic problem was back immediately after the trial run had ended.

There was no logic in having a bus corridor in a city where there were only 32,000 buses as compared to over 73 lakh vehicles, it contended.

5 yrs on, vendors await allotment of sites

New Delhi, July 5
There are more than one lakh applicants waiting for allotment of vending sites by the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi.

As per municipal figures, over 1.31 lakh people have applied for the allotment of hawking and vending sites five years ago, of which the erstwhile MCD managed to give only 1,045 sites. The Tehbazari and street vending scheme was launched in 2007.

Due to non-availability of authorised vending sites or tehbazari, thousands of people are carrying trade activities on footpaths. They work under constant fear of the Delhi police and municipal staff to whom they are forced to pay lion's share of their earned money.

"People selling their goods on footpath and streets are not only illegal, but they also create lot of traffic jam. That is why they are harassed by the traffic police," said Manish Gupta, commissioner of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), at the Standing Committee meting today.

"The task of allotting tehbazari and vending sites was assigned to ward and zonal vending committees. The job of identification of these sites was also to be undertaken by these committees, but the corporation has not been able to fulfil the duty even after the directions from the Supreme Court," said Farhad Suri, leader of the opposition in the SDMC.

After taking two year's time, the unified MCD identified 3,500 sites, which were reduced to 2,016 due to objections by the traffic police and RWAs.

However, the civic agency has not been able to allot even the said sites. The 1,045 vending spots issued include 435 in Shahdara north zone, 323 Civil zone, 179 in Sadar Paharganj zone, 92 in central zone and 16 in west zone.

The MCD had also received over 16,000 applications for hawking licence. "These licences should have been given by March 2010. But no such licence have been issued to the applicants so far," said Suri.

He said that a demand for issuing these licences and allotment of at least the 1,000 available vending sites has been put forth in the meeting.
