:
A 21-day Special Summer School 2012 programme organised by the Academic Staff College (ASC) of Guru Nanak Dev University concluded here today. Dr Inderjit Kaur, chairperson, All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, Amritsar, was the chief guest at the valedictory session. Dr Inderjit Kaur said education should make good human beings. She said teachers must disseminate human values like love, affection, compassion, mercy, honesty and integrity.

Power pole catches fire:
Fire broke at an electricity pole in Sector 47 this morning. The fire control room and the electricity department were informed. One water tender was sent and the fire was brought under control in 15 minutes.

Jhajjar
Two die in mishap
: Two persons were killed when their motorcycle collided head-on with a canter near Bhapdauda village on the Jhajjar-Sampla road here on Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Harjeet (36) and his sister-in-law, Ratni (50), of Bhadani village here. The mishap took place this evening when the victims were returning to their village from Sampla town. Though the passersby rushed the victims to the PGIMS, Rohtak, they succumbed to their injuries. A case has been registered against the canter driver. 

Panipat
Man shot
: Pawan (32) was shot dead by some assailants on Wednesday. The victim was on his way to Chatiya village in Sonepat district from Panipat. He was shot dead when he reached near Patti Kalyana village on the NH-1. The assailants came in a car and fled the scene after firing several shots at the victim. The police said preliminary investigations revealed that the murder was a case of personal animosity.

Police custody
: The police has arrested Rajesh (22) in connection with the murder of his neighbour, Dalip (52) of Buroli village. The accuesd along with his family members attacked Dalip for objecting the victim against playing cards outside his residence on June 30. Rajesh was produced in a local court, which remanded him to two-day police custody on Thursday. 

Sirsa
Three held
: The police arrested three members of a gang selling spurious chemicals used in the treatment of seeds on Wednesday. The arrests were made near Patwar Bhawan here. The police also seized 4,000 pouches of the chemicals from the accused and impounded a car from them. The police intercepted the car near Patwar Bhawan and arrested Deepak, Bhalla and Sushil with the spurious chemicals.

Motorcyclist dies: Mukesh Narula, a motorcyclist, died while his wife, Suman, was critically injured when a canter hit his bike near the Gillankhera crossing in Fatehabad on Tuesday. The couple was coming from Sirsa with their one-year-old daughter when the accident occurred. 

rs 3 lakh stolen: Miscreants stole Rs 3 lakh from a car by breaking its windowpane at RSD Colony here on Wednesday. Satish Kumar, a contractor, said he had withdrawn the money from his bank. He had gone to his home to bring some documents, keeping the bag containing money on the front seat, which was found missing when he came back. Satish has lodged a complaint with the police.

SONEPAT
Man kills wife
: Krishna (48) of Dhurana village was strangulated and beaten to death with a stick on Thursday by her husband, Sat Narain (50), who escaped after committing the crime. The victim was grinding ‘chatni’ on the roof of her house when she was attacked by the alleged accused. Her illicit relations were suspected to be reason behind the murder. A case has been registered.

Aid to WW-II veterans enhanced
: The Himachal Pradesh Government has enhanced the financial assistance being extended to Second World War veterans and their widows.The enhancement has been made from Rs 500 per month to Rs 750 per month from April 1, 2012. Only those persons who are above the age of 60 years and not in receipt of any kind of pension will be entitled to this enhancement. Their annual income should also not exceed Rs 15, 000 per annum, said an official spokesperson.

SUNDERNAGAR
One dies as truck falls into canal
: One person Bhup Singh of Rajwari village was feared drowned and another Heam Parabh of Rakri village was saved by the public when a truck loaded with cement fell into the BBMB canal on the Sundernagar-Baggi road on Thursday. The police said the truck was on the way from Sundernagar to Baggi and fell into the canal.
