BJP to protest power tariff hike

New Delhi, June 27
The BJP today announced that it would stage demonstrations in different parts of the city on June 29 in protest against the 24 per cent hike in power tariff by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).

In a joint conference, Delhi unit chief of the BJP Vijender Gupta and leader of opposition in the Delhi Legislative Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that the DERC had effected 75 per cent hike in power tariff during the last 10 months. In this regard, the BJP will initiate a signature campaign against the alleged connivance between the Delhi government and the power distribution companies. The protest will continue till the hiked tariff is withdrawn.

The BJP leaders said that in order to benefit the companies, the DERC has fixed the rate of Rs 4 per unit for the slab up to 200 units. If a person is consuming more than 400 units, he has to pay at a rate of Rs 7 per unit. Besides, the fixed charge on load has also been increased.

They said that the Union government constituted the electricity regulatory commission with the objective that after the privatization of power supply, discoms would not exploit the consumers, but the things are happening to the contrary.

Former DERC chairman Bijender Singh had found that the power companies earned huge profits, so he recommended 20 per cent reduction in tariff, the leaders added.

Meanwhile today, several Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) opposed the DERC's move to effect a steep hike in power tariff and increase fixed charges on the pleas made by the private power distribution companies (discoms).

They demanded the resignation of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for helping discoms, and said that they will stop paying the hiked bills.

They said that the mandate of the regulatory body should be to look after the interest of consumers, while DERC is taking care of discoms only.

"The objections and suggestions submitted to DERC against the tariff hike were ignored. Most of the objections filed by RWAs remain unanswered by the DERC and power companies," said VN Bali, Ram Vihar RWA.

The RWAs have been opposing the earlier tariff hike till the CAG audit is done of the discoms accounts, said many members.

CM promises subsidy

New Delhi, June 27
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said that the Delhi government has nothing to take with the hiked power tariff. It has been done by the DERC that is not under the city government.

However, she promised power subsidy that will give some relief to the citizens. A proposal regarding the subsidy will be tabled before cabinet in the next meeting.

Saying that DERC is not under the city government, the Chief Minister said that those who opposed the hiked tariff should go to power tribunal instead of asking the government to take action.

However, Congress MP from West Delhi, Mahabal Mishra said that the hiked tariff would damage the party in the assembly election to be held next year. A few other leaders said that this decision should have been taken in consultation with the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.

Two labourers died after a portion of a wall of a fire station collapsed on them at Gokulpuri in northeast Delhi this morning. The victims are Pramod (21) and Zohar (45), who belong to Bihar. They were reportedly working on a drain near the fire station when the wall collapsed at 8.15 am.

According to the police, about six labourers were working at the drain under the instructions of a private contractor when the incident occurred. The wall allegedly became weak because of accumulation of water under its foundation.

The labourers, who were trapped under the debris, were rescued during a joint operation by the police and fire officials. They were rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where doctors declared two labourers brought dead.

A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered at the Gokulpuri police station. Police officials are questioning the contractor and other labourers to ascertain the exact sequence of events.

The victims' families have been informed about the incident. The postmortem will be conducted after the families arrive in Delhi.
