Not 100, but BCom cutoff at Hindu is 99.25%
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 25
Though Delhi University colleges stood by their word and spared the students the horror of 100% cutoff in the first list announced today, there is not much relief for the aspirants as most colleges increased the cutoffs from 0.5% to even 4 % in commerce courses.

Like every year, competition will be toughest for BCom (hons) and economics (hons) for which the cutoffs are the highest. Interestingly, this year, Hindu College and not Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) came out with the highest BCom cutoff for science students at 99.25%. Last year, Hindu College had offered BCom (hons) admissions at 95.5%-99%. But SRCC, which had last year faced criticism for setting its BCom (hons) cutoff for science students at an unrealistic 100%, chose to keep it at 96.5%-98.5%. For economics (hons), the college has kept the cutoff at 96.75-97.75%.

At 96.25%-98.25%, Hansraj College also hiked its BCom cutoff by 0.25% as compared to last year's 96%-97%.

At Lady Sri Ram College (LSR), the cutoffs for both BCom and economics (hons) at 97 % are the same as the last year.

At Ramjas also, the BCom cutoff for the commerce students has increased by 1 %. The college has pegged its cutoff at 96%-98% as against last year's 95% to 98%.

For the much sought-after English (hons), the CATE cutoffs for top colleges like LSR, Miranda House, Hindu and KMC stand at 81.75%, 80%, 84.7% and 82.4%, respectively.

Even for the colleges that do not admit students for English (hons) through CATE scores, the cutoffs went higher. Gargi set its cutoff at 89%-93%, Ramjas 89.5%-95-5% and Sri Ventakeshwara College at 88-96%.

In the science stream, courses like microbiology, physics and zoology have also seen a hike in the cutoffs.

At Miranda House, the cutoff for physics (hons) is 95% as compared to 92 % last year. Similarly, at 96 %, Ramjas cutoff has gone up from last year's 88 %.

At Hansraj and Kirori Mal College (KMC), the cutoffs for zoology (hons) have increased by 3 %. While the cutoff for the course at Hansraj is 90%, KMC cutoff stood at 88%.

Sri Ventakeshwara has kept the physics cutoff same as the last year at 93.33%. But cutoffs for chemistry (hons), botany (hons) and zoology (hons) have increased by almost 2 % each at 92, 81 and 86.33 %, respectively.

The cutoffs for the OBC category have also increased this year, by at least 2 to 3 % in most commerce and science courses.

Unlike last year, when the admissions opened a day after the cutoffs were declared, the students who meet the requirements of the first list can approach the colleges tomorrow itself.

Last year, the cutoffs were announced without submissions of the pre-admission forms which made the colleges difficult to estimate the number of applicants applying to the university. This year, the university decided to reintroduce the forms. A whopping 1.46 lakh aspirants have applied to the university this time.

Admissions under the first list will continue till June 28 and the second list will be notified on June 29.

While expressing his views about the Delhi University's cutoff list, JM Khurana, dean, students' welfare, said that students should not be worried about the cutoffs as this year DU would release five cutoff lists. Students should give more focus to the course rather giving preference to the college as the syllabus, degree and selection process of the professors of all the DU colleges are similar.

IIT Delhi to plan city’s drainage
Syed Ali Ahmed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 25
The Cabinet today gave its nod for appointing the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi as a consultant for preparation of master plan of drainage (MPD) for the capital city.

While talking to mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the earlier Master Plan of Drainage was finalised in 1981. It was prepared by engaging the departmental staff.

Since then a sea change had taken place in the scenario of Delhi as population and habitation had reached a level of saturation.

The MPD prepared by the irrigation and flood control has to integrate it with the Master Plan 2001 of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), but instead of reviewing it, the drainage system has been upgraded in piecemeal manner from time to time by way of remodeling of some existing drainage and construction of a few new drains by various civic agencies.

The DDA has notified the MPD 2021 in which a fresh approach to drainage problem is suggested, which incorporate provision of effluent treatment plants at outfall of drains, a time bound programme for augmentation and capacity revision of existing drains and proposing new drains due to fast urbanisation of the city.

Dikshit said that keeping in view the fast changing scenario due to coming up of the new colonies, unplanned growth and multi-storey characteristic of expansion, in 2007 it was decided to prepare a new MPD. Further, preparation of the new drainage master plan had also become essential as the system had become too old to be repaired or revived. The instances of chocking of drains were being regularly noticed.

Further, the Delhi State Spatial Data Institute or Geo Spatial Delhi Limited will provide data available with them to consultant, free of cost.

Dikshit expressed confidence that new MPD would take shape to take care of the future drainage needs of the capital to make it a world-class city.

New power rates today
Syed Ali Ahmed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 25
The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) may announce new hiked rate of electricity tomorrow, sources said. They said that there might be different tariff for peak and non-peak hours and there might be change in commercial rate also.

An official of the Delhi Transco Limited said that new power tariff would be announced tomorrow. There may be some hike in the new tariff.

When asked about the new power tariff, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said that the power regulator DERC would have to take a realistic view of the situation while finalising the new rates.

"We are waiting for the DERC to announce the (tariff) order. Everybody knows about the situation. I hope the decision of the regulatory body will be based on realistic view of the current situation,'' said the Chief Minister.

Justifying the demand by the private discoms to hike the tariff, Dikshit said cost of power had increased significantly in the past few years and the new rates would have to be finalised taking into consideration the ground realities.

The discoms have been demanding a hefty hike in tariff, arguing that they have been incurring "huge losses" in the absence of a cost reflective tariff structure.

An official of the power department said that there was no other way but to hike the tariff to ensure power supply in the city. He said that discoms demanded financial help to bailout them from their losses that the government could not do. Last year the government had given them Rs 500 crore to bail them out, he added.
