Nightmarish wait for water in several areas The people of Delhi, struggling to quench their thirst, are forced to shell out nine times more taxes compared to the residents of Mumbai. Still they get little water or no water at all sometimes, said BJP leaders hitting out at the Congress-led state government over the issue of water shortage in the national Capital. There is total chaos on the water front as several areas of Delhi have been receiving no water supply for the past 15 days. Even after the Supreme Court asking Punjab, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan to devise a common formula for sorting out the crisis, the problem seems to have become the biggest challenge annually for the state government which is busy in passing the buck on the neighbouring states. Reshuffle rumours
Rumours of reshuffle in the Delhi cabinet have discouraged many a minister from going to hill stations this summer. According to the grapevine, there may be some changes as Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit is not quite satisfied with the functioning of a few ministers. The assembly election is just one and a half years away. In such a short time, she wants some effective work to show to the voters. She prefers work that is visible to woo the electorates, according to a city politician. Personality development
A personality development programme launched by the Delhi Minorities Commission at Jamia Millia Islamia was widely appreciated by the Muslim community. This is the only programme that has been initiated by the commission for the graduating students in order to prepare them for job interviews. A group of students on campus said that most of the times, the applicants are rejected due to weak personality. They fail to get jobs. Good personality developed through this programme will help them get good jobs. Treatment denied to accident victim There have been several instances of denial of treatment by private hospitals to road accident victims, but in a recent case the country's premier hospital, AIIMS drew the ire of many youngsters following a post on a Delhi Traffic Police line's account on the Facebook by a road trauma injured Aditya Sharma. Sharma, an employee of MNC XL Capital in Gurgaon, was allegedly referred to AIIMS' Trauma Centre by doctors of the main casualty. This even as he had a head injury and a severe leg pain later diagnosed with a fracture. Apparently, he wasn't even given first-aid and had to go to the trauma centre without any assistance in an auto on a busy Saturday evening. He said doctors told him as per protocol they could not attend him as he was a road accident case. All such cases are referred to the trauma centre, he was told. "The incident shows the insensitivity of the staff and doctors at the government hospital…," reads the post. (Himani Chandel, Syed Ali Ahmed, Ananya Panda) |
Kondli tragedy: BJP wants workers’ safety
New Delhi, June 17 Questioned the functioning of the DJB, headed by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, he said it was due to the negligence of the DJB that such tragic incidents happened. Online tax payment to check evasion
New Delhi, June 17 The Delhi government had collected a total revenue of Rs 19,972 crore in 2011-12 and set a target to generate Rs 26,150 crore from tax revenue in 2012-13, an increase of 31 per cent from the previous fiscal. The officials said that there was a scope for improving tax collection and the government had decided to streamline the tax administration to punish tax evaders and ensure transparency. In the report filed earlier this month, the CAG had said that it found discrepancies such as cases of irregular claims of tax exemption, grant of confessional rates of tax, non- realisation of taxes and under assessment. The report said it also found cases of exemption of tax against "fake forms" submitted by the dealers in support of inter-state sale as well as concealment of sale by them. However, the officials said the government had already introduced a number of "concrete measures" for checking tax evasion and leakages, which includeS doing away with manual filing of sale and purchase details by the traders. "There will be stress on focused enforcement of tax compliance, drive against fraudulent refund claims and expeditious disposal of appeals," an official said. The government has already extended the facility of online payment through 17 banks. "More banks are being added for the online payment facility during the current year to provide a wider choice to our dealers," he said. The government will soon completely dispense with the physical issuance of statutory forms needed to be filed by inter-state traders, he added. |
