Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 9
An old school building adjacent to an under-construction multi-level parking lot collapsed late last night prompting the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to order an inquiry into the matter.

Though no one was injured in the incident, which took place in Pitampura, the NDMC asked its officials to investigate the matter to book the guilty.

"Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reasons for collapse of the old school building structure adjacent to a multi-level car parking site," said a senior official of the NDMC.

"Heavy machinery, including 'Proclaine', to level and consolidate the earth has already been put into service," he said.

North Delhi Mayor Mira Aggarwal and Commissioner PK Gupta visited the site today.

"They ordered an inquiry to ascertain the reasons for the incident. Ravi Dass, engineer in-chief of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, has been entrusted the work of inquiry.

He would submit the interim report in three days and complete the report in 10 days," said a spokesperson of the NDMC.

It is learnt that due to leakage, water accumulated under the earth which got softened resulting in its shifting. It also dismantled the structure erected to support the earth and the concrete walls of the building of the school, it said.

The softening and shifting resulted in collapse of the part of the old MCD school building, it said.

"Teams have been deputed to control the situation and check further loss. Seven pumps have been installed to dewater the area. Concrete waste and debris dumping also started to fill up the area," the spokesperson said.

Govt denies allegations of favouring pvt firm
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 9
Slashing the allegations made in a complaint in a judicial court, the Delhi government today said that no undue favours had been extended by the transport department to any company.

The complaint said that the state government had extended unwarranted favours to a private company by the way of awarding it a contract of automated inspection and certification (I&C) lanes.

Making a statement justifying the award of contract, officials of the state government said that the contract had been awarded to the M/S Environmental Systems Products Inc (ESP), Mumbai, with the approval of the Council of Ministers after following the laid procedure.

They said that the project which was executed at a cost of Rs 2.48 crore by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune, has awarded the work to ESP through open bidding.

The work was handed over to the transport department of the government by the ARAI after its completion.

"But after the expiry of the warranty period of two years provided by the company, the department found it difficult to maintain and operate the lanes and therefore manual inspections of the vehicles had to be reverted to the old ones. Meanwhile, the ARAI was entrusted with the work of constructing the third I&C Lane, which again got the work executed through the same company," said a senior official.

Clarifying the agreement of the contract, the official said, "For the third lane, we entrusted the operation and maintenance of the three lanes to the ESP itself for the automated inspection of the commercial vehicles for five years at the rate prescribed under the rules through an agreement valid up to February 2013.

“The agreement was signed by the then commissioner of transport after obtaining the necessary approval of the government," he said.

Three held for human trafficking
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 9
The Delhi police today arrested three persons, including a 40-year-old woman, for allegedly being involved in human trafficking. The arrest also led to the rescue of an abducted woman from the gang, said a senior police officer.

The accused Kamla, Jeet Ram, 54, and Rajbir, 32, were held after a complaint that a 42-year-old woman, a home nurse, had been missing from Mangolpuri since April 20.

During Kamla's interrogation, a pathetic story of human trafficking came to light, said B S Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer).

"Kamla told the police that on April 20, she and a man named Vijay had asked the nurse Guddi (name changed) to accompany them to work at a house in Haryana's Palwal district for two days. Guddi agreed to accompany them and went to Palwal, where they stayed at Jeet's house. However, on April 21, Jeet sold Guddi for Rs 30,000 to Rajbir," he said.

Kamla was arrested and a raid was conducted at Rajbir's house in Rajapur village of Uttar Pradesh.

"Guddi was rescued from the house and Rajbir arrested," Jaiswal added.

Guddi told the police that Rajbir, who works in Ghaziabad, used to rape her and keep her locked in the house.

"Jeet was arrested from his house in Palwal on Saturday, but Vijay is still absconding. Further interrogation is on," Jaiswal said.
