House: Row over law and order
New Delhi, June 5 Later, Malhotra changed the statement, saying that liquor is sold near temples and gurdwaras, but the police takes no action to stop this practice. He said that Delhi is known as the crime Capital as every day a number of crime cases are reported. "This is our city. Perception about the city should be changed. The police should control the crime in Delhi. The Delhi police comes directly under the Union government. The Home Minister should resign due to the failure of law and order in the city," he said. While Karan Singh Tanwar, a senior BJP MLA, was speaking on the law and order situation in Delhi, the ruling party MLAs objected to the words used against
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. They demanded that the words should be deleted from the record. Speaker Yoganand Shastri directed the officials concerned to delete all the objectionable words from the record and asked the MLAs to speak only on the law and order situation. Another BJP MLA Dharamdev Solanki said that the police should take action against the criminals active in villages. Taking part in discussion, Congress MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah said that the police is doing its job well. He demanded an inquiry into the shooting incident of Bharat Singh, he said. |
Heavy rush of SC/ST applicants at DU
New Delhi, June 5 For nearly 13,000 seats that the university offers to SC/ST candidates, 6,100 students have already bought the forms in just two days. For the first time, the university has allowed its undergraduate SC/ST students, who secured a reserved seat in the previous session, to re-register for admission in the reserved category. The move has come as a big relief for students who have not been happy with their course or the college. Till last year, students were allowed to re-register in the same admission season by surrendering their first allotment. "I am delighted that my options are open. Otherwise, the allotment process is pretty much fair. There is no room for readmission and making a specific choice," said Sandeep Meena, an applicant at Arts Faculty today. As a practice, SC/ST students are allotted courses and colleges as per the availability and choices specified during registration. However, limited seats mean that many candidates do not get the desired college or course. "Till now, the university policy did not allow students who had been allotted reserved seats to re-register for quota admission in subsequent sessions. From this session, we have decided to allow SC/ST students to re-register for fresh admission if they are not satisfied with the course or college allotted last year," said Dr J M Khurana, Dean of Students' Welfare. "There has been a demand to allow re-registration and fresh admission for those who have taken admission in SC/ST category. We want SC/ST candidates to have the same privilege of readmission as general and OBC candidates," Dr Khurana added. Also, this time unlike the general category, category candidates do not have the option of filling an online form. "Every year the university conducts centralized admissions for SC/ST category students on the ideal of equal opportunity and to avoid any discrimination at any colleges. They have to register themselves in person at any of the four centres--Arts Faculty building, Deputy Dean's office and Rajdhani and Shyam Lal Anand colleges. "There is a separate admission brochure for the SC/ST candidates which guide them about the admission process, the previous year cutoffs and the relaxations for them. For example, this time around they are exempted from appearing for CATE, the entrance for English Hons. They will be allotted seats on the basis of their cutoff now," said another official handling the admissions at Dean Student Welfare office, South Campus. |
City parched as raw water supply hit
New Delhi, June 5 The administrations of the two states are at loggerheads over the issue leading to the under-production of two major water treatment plants of Delhi--Haiderpur and Wazirabad. Several parts of south, west, southwest and northwest Delhi are hit by the water crisis. The areas affected include Pitampura, Rohini, Paschim Vihar, Delhi Cantonment, Rajouri Garden, Najafgarh, Moti Nagar, Uttam Nagar and Janakpuri. According to Delhi Jal Boards officials, the raw water supply to Haiderpur plant, which produces 210 million gallons per day, was reduced by over 20 MGD approximately. They said that Haryana is not releasing either the additional 80 MGD water that Delhi has been demanding for the past few years. DJB's three newly completed water treatment plants at Okhla, Bawana and Dwarka have not been able to start their functioning due to the non-supply of additional water. "The Munak canal that supplies raw water from Haryana was not concretized earlier which led to loss of water to the tune of 80 MGD through seepage and breaching at several places. In order to save this water, we paid the Haryana administration to construct the canal but even after that we have not been receiving our savings that is 80 MGD water,"
GM Dhaul, Member, Water Supply in DJB. "We had paid around Rs 500 crore as deposit work to the Haryana Irrigation Department for constructing the canal," said one of the chief engineers of DJB. However, going by the statement of DJB counterparts in Haryana administration, the water is being released to its due capacity. "We have been supplying as per the capacity of the treatment plants and there is no reduction on our part," said one chief engineer in Haryana Irrigation Department. On the contrary, he said that there is an additional discharge for Wazirabad plant to maintain its capacity level. "In compliance with the orders of Supreme Court, we are providing 425 cusecs of water to Haiderpur plant and around 600 cusecs to Wazirabad plant," he said. Expressing hope on the matter, the DJB CEO, Debishree Mukherjee said that the issue will be worked out soon. "We are putting in efforts and hope to resolve it soon," she said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has said that she will raise the matter with the Haryana Chief Minister in a meeting scheduled to take place on June 9. |
Rain showers relief
New Delhi, June 5 The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded the maximum temperature at 40.8 degree Celsius while the minimum settled around 26.4 degree Celsius.
