Bid on MLA’s life
New Delhi, June 2 The incident has occurred just a day after the MLAs demanded security in the Delhi Assembly House. The Chief Minister today met the Police Commissioner B. K. Gupta to discuss the security scenario in the Capital in the wake of MLA Bharat Singh being shot at by unidentified assailants. She met the Police Commissioner at the behest of Speaker Yoganand Shastri after MLAs yesterday demanded police protection, citing the increased "threat perception" while dealing with the difficult situations in public interest. Speaking to the Chief Minister, the police chief told her that Personal Security Officers (PSOs) have been provided to a number of MLAs. "I have informed the Chief Minister that any MLA having apprehension about security or facing threats to his life will be given police protection," Gupta said. Yesterday in the Delhi Assembly, an extortion call to MLA Jaswant Rana's son had prompted other legislators to seek enhanced protection. Dikshit had said that the MLAs' security was of vital importance and the issue was being taken up with the police. As a number of Congress MLAs demanded "adequate security" for the legislators, the Speaker issued a direction to call the Police Commissioner to the House. |
MLAs in shock
New Delhi, June 2 The Leader of the opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that the incident of daylight shooting of MLA Bharat Singh in his office is very shameful. If such an attack could be carried out on an MLA, what would be the security of a common citizen. MLAs Jaswant Rana, Shoaib Iqbal and Surender Kumar had raised the issue in the House only yesterday. All the MLAs present in the Assembly expressed their concern about the fast deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi. Malhotra said the law and order in Delhi comes directly under the purview of the Union home ministry. Both the Delhi government and the Union government have ignored their concerns about the MLAs' security. He demanded the resignation of the Union home minister in this regard. LJP MLA Shoaib Iqbal said the attack on Bharat Singh's life shows that MLAs cannot work honestly without security. All the 70 MLAs in Delhi should be given security. Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta said that law and order has completely failed in the city. The people of Delhi don't feel safe either in their homes or outside. |
Drizzle brings respite from heat wave
New Delhi, June 2 The maximum temperature was recorded at 44.2° C, four degrees above the average while the minimum remained uncomfortably six degrees above average at 33.2°C. The meteorological department has forecast rain over the next 24 hours. "The weather will be pleasant tomorrow. There is a possibility of thundershowers late night today or tomorrow morning, The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to oscillate between a high and low of 42° and 32° C," said an official of the India Meteorological Department. Yesterday the maximum temperature was recorded at 43° C, three degrees above the average, while the minimum was 34.3° C, seven degrees above the average. |
Health system gives eunuch community the go-by
New Delhi, June 2 Forced to exclusion from community and opportunities, they are faced with the problems of multiple dimensions, with lack of support and violence within families still a major worry, noted representatives of the TG and eunuch section here today during a daylong "National Hijra Habba" organised to evolve a road-map for enabling them a rightful position. The issues of human rights of this invisible segment of the population have failed to draw the attention of the policy makers, maintained the section. The discrimination that characterises the life of these people is seen everywhere even in government hospitals in Delhi and elsewhere where they have limited access to the anti-retroviral treatment centres. "We have to go to private hospitals as access to health services in government hospitals is difficult. Also in government hospitals, the staff and the system are still not sensitised to our needs. Feminisation needs of the TGs are not incorporated in the health programmes," said Abhina Aher, a TG member. Very few who take a stand and manage to sail through social stigma and rigmaroles of public offices in getting a passport, opening a bank account etc., have to live with peculiarities surrounding dual identity issue. Amidst the odds, there is a reason for all those from this community to smile as from this year IGNOU has introduced a new category-"others" in its application forms. |
