Cops insensitive to child labour: CWC
New Delhi, May 26 Butterflies' childline, an NGO, had accused SHO Satyavir Dagar and other officials of the Jamia Nagar police station of non-cooperation and lapse in handling children on May 22, the day when the rescue operation was carried. Responding to the complaints, the Lajpat Nagar Child Welfare Committee (CWC) pulled up the SHO and the Jamia Nagar's juvenile welfare official on May 24 when children were produced before it and directed the Joint Commissioner of Police, special unit of women and child unit to submit an inquiry report on the same. The committee noted that role of the SHO was objectionable citing that under Section 63 (2) of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, every police station should have at least one official with appropriate training for handling of such cases. But here the SHO has failed in ensuring this, said the committee. The CWC observed that there appears a serious lapse on the part of the police which was supposed to assist members of the NGO. On May 22, while the police took more than five hours to respond after the NGO informed them about the child labour. The two girls had to wait in the police station for more than three hours after they were rescued before being escorted to Global Family Home. A female member of the NGO was allegedly threatened by the accused, Sabina, who lost in the municipal polls and had managed to have the backing of nearly 200 supporters gathering outside the Jamia Nagar police station by 10.30 in the night. "The employer tried to influence the children and psychologically harass the team members. Sabina showing her political power tried to forcing me to withdraw the case. She had gathered a mob outside and people simply walked in the room," said a member of the NGO. According to members of the NGO, the police was not cooperative and ignored the concerns raised by its team until the CWC chairperson, Raaj Mangal Prasad, intervened followed by calls from their top bosses on the night of the rescue. The police has been asked to register a case under the Child Labour Act, 1986 and explore if provisions of the Bonded Labour Act, 1976, are applicable as the girls, who were trafficked from Bijnour in UP, didn't get any money in return and were told that it will be sent to their mother. |
