A Delhi police constable died and a home guard was injured while chasing the members of the "Mewati gang" at Bharat Nagar in northwest Delhi early this morning.
Sources said that the "Mewati gang" consists of gangsters of a village in Haryana. They commit thefts of vehicles and cattle.

According to the police, the police control room (PCR) received a call at 2 am that some people were throwing stones at K-Block community centre in Netaji Subhash Place.

Sources said that five-six members of the gang escaped in a mini truck (Tata 407) after beating a person at the community centre.

The police pickets and PCR vehicles of the same area were informed of the mini truck, which did not have a number plate.

When the truck left the community centre, a PCR vehicle and an Emergency Response Vehicle started following it. The gang while moving in the truck was throwing stones at the vehicles.

Constable Naresh Kumar learnt that the gang had damaged police pickets located near the Bharat Nagar police station. At that moment, three PCR vehicles, two police motorcycles and an Emergency Response Vehicle were chasing the gang.

Kumar was on duty at a police picket near Bharat Nagar police station.

The police personnel from different posts chased the gangsters for about three kilometres until they reached the police station. Kumar and a home guard, constable Shankar, then sped after the truck on a motorcycle and overtook it.

The gang members noticed the motorcycle in front of the truck and rammed into it at 'Ganda Nala' in Bharat Nagar at 3 am. Kumar suffered head injuries and died on the spot. Shankar also sustained grievous injuries. He was taken to Shankar Lal hospital.

The gang escaped after the police diverted its attention to the two constables. The police is planning to announce a reward for Kumar.

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 18
Having learnt lessons from its experiences, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IP University) has decided to act against touts and middlemen during the counselling sessions for this year's admission process.

"As counselling sessions for this year has started, the university has put up around two dozen big banners with slogans warning the students against the touts," said the spokesperson for the varsity.

"The banners have been displayed especially in areas prone to touting activities like canteens, information counters, counselling venues and banks. Security guards of the university have been instructed to keep a firm eye for suspects in and around the campus," he added.

This time, the documents of the qualified candidates are being verified separately to make the counselling foolproof and ward off imposters.

"Around 1.65 lakh candidates appear for the common entrance test for nearly 21,000 odd seats for various programmes of the university every year. The huge figure attracts touts and middlemen. The motive behind the drive against the touts is to protect the students and their parents from the touts," he said.
