IIT-JEE topper does Faridabad proud
Faridabad, May 18 Soon after the results were out this morning, neighbours and relatives started thronging Arpit’s house to congratulate the family. Choked with emotion, Arpit’s father, OP Aggarwal, welcomed the guests with open arms. He was at a loss of words at his son’s success. Ecstatic, Arpit went to his school to join his teachers and schoolmates for the celebrations. He said: “I am truly a proud product of MVN School since I have been here since my primary classes. I have no words to express my feelings at this hour of success.” He gushed, “This could not have been possible without the guidance and inspiration of my revered schoolteachers who always encouraged and mentored me to be successful.” He said although he was not expecting to top the exam, he was optimistic of clearing it with high grades. However, he said, he was not surprised at scoring 385/401. Staff members of the school say they had high expectations of Arpit who had always topped in the school’s exams. He has been an NTSE rank holder and a KVPY scholarship holder. Also, he stood first in the NCR in the Indian National Chemistry Olympiad and the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad. He had been invited to a one-month mathematics camp at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai. Varun Sharma, president of the MVN Society, which runs MVN School, said earlier Nitin Jain and now Arpit Aggarwal had brought Faridabad on the educational map of the country. |
Free grain for poor in
Sirsa, Mohindergarh
Sirsa, May 18 The step comes up on the suggestions of the Central Vigilance Committee (CVC) on the Public Distribution System (PDS) set up by the Supreme Court in a PIL on starvation due to lack of food. “Under guidelines from the state government, 10 food cards will be given to each panchayat of the district to meet any emergency situation. The panchayats will issue a food card to such persons entitling them to purchase 10-kg foodgrain per card per month free of cost from the PDS chain,” said Deputy Commissioner J Ganesan. Consequently, the authorities will provide one-quintal wheat per village over and above its existing requirement under the PDS. The cards utilised and wheat consumed will be replenished at the end of every month so that the basic needs of the vulnerable and poorer sections of society are taken care of and no one starves for lack of foodgrains. Earlier, the CVC had suggested foodgrains at subsidised rates to vulnerable sections of society in 174 most backward districts of the country, including Sirsa and Mohindergarh districts. Beneficiaries were to be in addition to those poor families, who have already been getting subsidised foodgrains under the Antodaya Ann Yojna (AAY) for the poorest of poor or those having below poverty line (BPL) and above poverty line (APL) cards. Asking the DCs of the two districts to identify beneficiaries based on the 2011 census, the Director-General of Food and Supplies, Haryana, had in March directed them to ensure that all disabled persons, single women-headed households, people with debilitating illness, homeless, destitute, elderly etc, who are the most-vulnerable classes were not left out. |
Rape likely, says medical report of shelter inmate
Rohtak, May 18 Sources in the PGIMS claimed that the report confirmed the possibility of a sexual intercourse as the victim had been found sexually active with some injury and bite marks on her body. Teeth bites and signs of struggle by the victim were also found. “She was not a virgin but it was not sure when such an assault (sexual) had taken place,” it is claimed in the report. The victim was about 21 years old.
“The authorities concerned had referred one victim for medical examination to the PGIMS recently. Her report was released today and handed over to the police,’’ said Dr Ashok Chauhan, Medical Superintendent of the PGIMS. The claim of the PGIMS officials that only one girl inmate had been sent for medical examination is contrary to the reports earlier that four or five girls had been recommended for such an examination as the inmates had alleged that several girls could have been victims of sexual abuse at the shelter home. This charge had surfaced on the first day itself when the four-member team of the NCPCR had raided Apna Ghar after complaints of child abuse were lodged with it. The district police chief, Vivek Sharma, was unavailable for his version. A case under various sections of the IPC, the Immoral Trafficking Act and the Labour Bonding Act has been registered against the accused. Meanwhile, the district court extended the police custody of Jaswanti and her driver, Satish, to May 24. The other five accused have been sent into judicial custody. They were arrested soon after the raid. |
NGO blacklisted in 2007, no records of govt funding
The activities of the Bharat Vikas Sangh (BVS), an NGO running several government-funded schemes for the destitute, have been going on here for the past over 17 years. Apna Ghar is a known place for orphaned children and women, though reports of child abuse have been trickling out for the past few years. While the main functionaries of the shelter home have been put behind the bars, the police deputed here has banned mediapersons from having any interaction with the inmates. “The NGO used to receive at least Rs 1,000 per child per month, but there is no record of the use of such funds. The authorities have also been paying funds separately for the lodging of runaway couples here for the past couple of years, but it has been alleged that the couples were asked to arrange their food themselves. A district child helpline was also started by the NGO last year for which funds to the tune of Rs 4.5 lakh were released. “We are amazed that the NGO running several projects funded by the government has not been maintaining proper records,” says Vinod Tikko, a member of the NCPCR team that raided the shelter home. As the president and the treasurer of the NGO, Jaswanti Narwal, are based in Rajasthan, the secretary of the body has been the caretaker residing in the same building. “We often heard cries and screams of children,” said DS Ranga, a resident of the colony. Jaswanti had high connections with officials. Therefore no one dared to lodge any complaint against the NGO, said another senior citizen residing nearby. The NGO was blacklisted by the authorities concerned in 2007 after complaints of irregularities were received, but it got a clean chit after about four months due to legal intervention. — TNS |
