New Delhi, June 7 During the 23 raids conducted in different areas, 6,370 kgs of unwholesome food and 7,660 kgs of substandard ice were destroyed. SDMC officials took action against 21 water trolleys, whereas 11 sugarcane crushers were seized. A total of 82 illegal eating outlets were closed during these raids. As many as 76 prosecutions were made against these outlets. The raids were conducted by the health department in view of the upcoming monsoon season. And the department is determined to check the sale of stale food in the rainy season. "Strict action will be taken against the sale of unhygienic food, cut fruits put openly on roadside and unwholesome ice," said a senior official of the health department. The officials said that they would continue to conduct such raids in the coming days. "These raids which are conducted to check the quality of street food items before the onset of monsoon are part of annual activities," the official said. Most of the vendors selling the food items in the open don't have the requisite licence. "Action is being taken against all illegal vendors in the city. Only 5 to 10 per cent of vendors selling food items on Delhi's roads have the required licence to set up such vending sites," he said. |

DU applicants may submit fee online now
New Delhi, June 7 Dean of Student Welfare JM Khurana today said that the online portal was up and running and that the students will now have the option of submitting the application fee online through a debit/credit card. "A total of 53,000 students have registered online till now, out of which 220 made payments through the gateway that started working today. The rest of 2,100 students have submitted demand drafts. The number will take at least a day's time to pick up further. Offline, we registered a total sale of 12,500 forms," Khurana said. Over the last three days, students had been complaining that there were several problems with online forms. They were supposed to send a demand draft to the university by snail mail or drop one in person, over the counter. Most students were worried about the time their DD would take to reach the university, which should not be beyond the last date for submission of forms. "I was really worried when I could not submit my form online on Tuesday. The website was really slow and after I found out about the demand draft requirement, I decided that I would come to the university personally. We had to come anyhow to submit a form for my sister under the physically challenged category. I would make the payment once I reach home, because I do not want the added tension of a DD, wondering when it will reach the university," said Manyata Sarkar who accompanied her visually challenged sister Madhura on North Campus today. One of the counsellors said, "The distress phone calls continue today though the nature of their queries has changed. Even though many students were relieved, others called to check if their demand drafts have arrived and if they can do anything to ensure that the DDs reach on time." |
