City students corner glory

Ludhiana students have made a clean sweep of the top positions in the class XII PSEB examination by securing the top nine positions in the state. Of these, seven are from BCM School, Focal Point, one from Government Model School, PAU, and one from Dashmesh Senior Secondary School.

Parul Gupta, who secured the top position in the PSEB class XII results said, "I had expected to be in the top five, but am happy to have stood first. There is no fixed number of hours for studies, as I used to study whenever, I felt like. I believe it is not possible to achieve anything without hard work."

Checking of Parcels
High drama at railway station
Ludhiana, June 7
High drama was witnessed at the railway station today, as excise and taxation officials tried to lift parcels from the station for checking, while the railway authorities did not let them do the same. Heated arguments were exchanged, as officials of both departments got stick to their decision.

Trader stabbed to death by rival
Ludhiana, June 7
Business rivalry took an ugly turn and led to the murder of a 40-year-old cycle parts manufacturer in broad daylight on the Gill road here today. The victim, Kewal Krishan Dawar (40), was stabbed to death in the afternoon by his business rival Gurmeet Singh.

Two suicides in the city
Ludhiana, June 7
Two suicides took place in different parts of the city here today. In the first incident, Gyan Singh (45) ended his life by consuming poison. His wife Balwinder Kaur had committed suicide barely four days ago.

Ludhiana MC poll: 61 crorepatis in fray
Ludhiana, June 7
A total of 61 crorepatis will be contesting the upcoming Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for June 10. The Congress party tops the list of crorepatis, with 29 such candidates, followed by 20 crorepatis from the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and 12 from the BJP.

The candidates, voters as well as the duty officials at the polling booth arranged for Ward No 9 for Nagar panchayat polls at Sahnewal were ill at ease as the number of votes were in far greater a number as compared to all other wards.

Ill-maintained roads welcome visitors
Ludhiana, June 7
Major Issues Heaps of garbage can be seen in many parts of the ward. Much of the developmental work is in limbo. A number of streets and roads are uncarpeted. Open drains are a cause of major nuisance, as dirty water often flows onto the streets. Industrialists complain poor infrastructure in the ward, affecting business adversely.

Congress, SAD candidates at loggerheads
Ludhiana, June 7
Congress candidate from ward number 56 has alleged that the SAD candidate from the same ward is helping “jhuggi” dwellers of the area in constructing a bathroom on the portion of road near J-Block of Sarabha Nagar.

Women in intensive campaigning mode in MC poll

Women candidates, who are generally labelled as rubber stamps for their husbands in the municipal corporation General House, seem to be all-time active in the present MC elections. Not bothered whether their better-halves or other male members of the family accompany them during intense campaigning, the contesting women candidates have taken the task boldly.

‘Exercise right to vote with caution’
Ludhiana, June 7
With the municipal corporation elections on June 10, the Environmental and Welfare Association, an NGO working towards making the mega city a better place to live in, has urged voters to exercise their right to vote with extra caution, so that only those candidates are elected who would serve people with commitment and ensure better delivery of basic civic amenities.

Both candidates and voters were benefited by special vehicles, although arranged separately by different political parties, to pick voters from their places, carry them to their respective polling booths and leave them back to their places.

It may sound amazing but it’s true. Akali candidate Baljit Singh and his contender, Surinder Bhatia, the Congress candidate, may be contesting against each other from the same ward i.e. ward number 11, but they share an intimacy to the extent that they can still pray for each other’s victory.

80.61 per cent polling recorded
Phillaur, June 7
A total of 80.61 per cent polling was recorded in the Goraya Nagar Panchayat elections. Thirty-four candidates were in the fray for 13 wards. Phillaur SDM-cum-returning officer Jasbir Singh said 8,479 voters, out of total 15,308, franchised their right to vote. He claimed that the poll process completed peacefully and no untoward incident was reported in the town.

Vickey elected unopposed
Amloh, June 7
The municipal council elections held in 12 wards today. A SAD candidate, Vickey Mittal from ward number 10, was declared elected unopposed. In ward number 8, candidate Surjit Kaur’s husband Jagdish Singh Rana alleged that their polling agent was beaten up inside the polling station and bogus votes were allegedly polled by outsider supporters of the SAD-BJP candidate, but the allegation was denied by the SAD-BJP alliance.

Reward policies of excise, taxation dept

In order to curb tax evasion and boost up the tax collection in state the excise and taxation department has launched reward policies for its officials and informers. While on the other side in an effort to plug revenue leakage, the Punjab government has mooted a proposal to award consumers insisting on bill after buying any commodity from a retail store.

Accident leads to traffic chaos

The colliding of truck and goods auto rickshaw in a divider led to traffic chaos at Rajpura road here today. The incident took place here this morning when the drivers of both the vehicles rammed into divider in order to avoid collision.
