Centre reduces public anger
Ludhiana, June 2 Talking to The Tribune, Ashok Sachdeva, general secretary, Petrol Pump Dealers’ Association, said Rs 2 dip in prices
would provide relief to the consumers. They might feel that it is less; still they will feel relieved as earlier the hike in petrol prices was about Rs 2 per liter only. “Now it is for the Punjab government to provide the major relief to those residing in the state. Other states are also imposing VAT up to 22 per cent on petrol, while in Punjab the VAT was as high as 32.5 per cent. If the state government matches the VAT with other states, there will be respite to the tune of Rs 9 per liter. We are condemning the Central Government for hiking the petrol prices, what are Meanwhile, the consumers have expressed “little” satisfaction over the slashed petrol prices. But the increased prices have put a dent in our pockets. In this severe weather conditions, we have to rely on air-conditioners too and huge quantity is consumed if it is switched on. The state government should also decrease the VAT so that more relief
is provided to consumers,” he added. Suman, a homemaker, said Rs 2 were slashed by the government when every section of society condemned the decision. “They have to move ahead with allies and the Opposition got an opportunity to condemn the Union government. They have not provided any relief to

4-member AAI team in city
Ludhiana, June 2 As this device helps in visibility while landing of an aircraft, there won’t any cancellation of flights at the airport. Earlier the flights used to be cancelled due to the poor visibility. And the absence of DVOR device was the main reason behind it. When the Airports Authority of India (AAI) planned to install this device, the high tension wires near the airport were major hindrance. In December 2011, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited demanded Rs 1.5 crore from the AAI for putting 66KV high tension wires underground as they were already shifting 11KV high tension wires from there. Without shifting these high tension wires, the airport authorities would have not been able to install DVOR. As per information, the state government has acquired 2.5 acre for installing this device. In the absence of DVOR device, the visibility required for the landing of an aircraft is 5 kilometers. And when the device starts functioning; only 2 kilometer visibility would be required for landing. Moreover, the aircraft would also be able to land in poor visibility, the problem faced earlier. While confirming it, VP Jain, manager, Sahnewal Airport, said the team had been asked to complete the installation of DVOR within 30 days. “Once this device is installed, the visibility issue would be resolved,” he said. The flights from the Ludhiana Airport had started in April 2010 and since then the airport authorities had been urging the government to upgrade the airport. |

Ludhiana, June 2 The much-awaited Sidhwan Canal expressway project, which is already running behind schedule, is expected to be completed by October. Dhillon said: “The accident rate on the expressway has increased suddenly as people were in habit of driving their vehicles at breakneck speed. We have decided to construct a service lane along the road to reduce accidents. This would be constructed outside the limits of the Municipal Corporation. I have already asked the PWD officials to prepare a design so that we would start the work at the earliest.” The PWD department in a notice issued today stated that illegal residential colonies or commercial establishments would not be given direct entry to the expressway. “These roads are being closed and the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) has been asked to initiate legal action in this regard,” read the notice issued by Executive Engineer of the PWD. The foundation stone of this project was laid in 2009. This 26.9 kilometer long expressway project would be constructed at a cost of Rs 318 crore. The expressway would be four laned with carriage way on each side from Doraha to Ludhiana-Ferozepur Road. And would act like a bypass for traffic going to Ferozepur. This project has nine bridges, which includes five canal bridges, two rail overbridges and two flyovers. The project got delayed due to the lack of coordination between several government departments. A review meeting was organised in Chandigarh on July 18, 2011. Soaring mercury, outages making life miserable
Ludhiana, June 2 If senior PSPCL officials are to be believed, a 100 MW new transformer installed at 220 KW Ferozepur Road substation in the city about a fortnight ago had become operational on Thursday evening and the power supply was restored in several localities fed from this sub station which included Model Town, Dugri, Sarabha Nagar, BRS Nagar and Rajguru Nagar. However, in area like Civil Lines and most of the old city localities fed from 66 KV GT Road substation, the power supply had taken a turn for the worse. Residents of the affected localities complain that unscheduled power cuts are imposed in the name of load shedding for durations ranging from half-an-hour to an hour-and-a-half at regular intervals all through the day. “There is no respite from outage even during the night when power supply is interrupted several times for an hour or so,” lamented several residents of Chhawni Mohalla. PSPCL sources revealed that as a result of the extremely hot weather conditions prevailing in the region, the incidents of breakdown to the distribution and transmission equipment had also gone up considerably, thereby disturbing the power supply in several localities. “A CT in the Janta Nagar division got burnt today morning while several feeders in Civil Lines were affected due to a snag last evening,” said PSPCL officials while claiming that the technical staff was deployed immediately and the faults were rectified to restore the power supply in the affected areas. While the city residents were grappling with dismal power situation in extreme weather conditions, the senior PSPCL officials at Patiala headquarters out rightly attributed the erratic power supply in the city to infrastructural problems. “Tere is absolutely no shortfall in availability of power as against total demand of electricity at present, and no power cuts on domestic feeders have been imposed not are there any restrictions on power consumption by the industry,” asserted the PSPCL |

Two senior citizen homes were also constructed in the ward. I had sent request suggesting that the ward being quite large should be divided into two as the funds received for a ward are limited. There are 82 parks in the ward. The work for making greenbelt along the canal is underway. I am associated with SAD and would support the party candidate from the ward RESIDENTS Speak Water supply is erratic and sometimes unclean. Water-logging is a huge problem in many parts of the ward. The roads have been carpeted to an extent, but many of them have just been carpeted in the wake of elections. Why do we have to wait for the end of MC term for some development to take
place? Water supply pipes installed in some of the areas are not good enough in LIG flats. Water keeps leaking from these pipes. There is no good park in the flats and whatever is there lie unclean. Wires dangle in the ward haphazardly. Not much has been done for the development of the
