Hundreds of Delhi Metro workers today gathered at Jantar Mantar today under the banner of Delhi Metro Kamgar Union (DMKU), alleging violation of labour laws by some contract companies and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

Explaining the nature of contract workers on the DMRC network, DMKU secretary Ajay Swami said, "On the 149 stations of Delhi Metro network, currently three areas employ contract employees - the TOM operators (ticket vending operators), the housekeeping staff and the guards. Over 5,000 contract employees work for DMRC right now. The JMD consultant is one such contractor which had employed 300 TOM operators for DMRC. While under the contract labour law, the minimum daily wages are Rs 328 per day, these employees get around Rs 270 per day. Besides, these companies ask for a deposit of Rs 25,000 as security amount before the joining date and make them sign their resignation letter along with their offer letter. Their arbitrary terms subject the employees to random laying off."

"JMD is just one contractor. Other contractors who employ nearly 800 TOM operators also underpay them. The housekeeping staff members should be earning around Rs 6,800, but they are paid nearly Rs 4,500. The DMRC must ensure the implementation of Contract Labour Act as well as the labour rights available to the workers under other labour laws. Moreover, the payment of the salary must be made in front of the principal employer (DMRC)," added DMKU president Praveen.

When contacted, a Delhi Metro official said, "The problem is being looked into. Every step will be taken to make sure that the grievances of the working force are addressed at the earliest."

Just one visit to Shahdara, Mongolpuri, Sultanpuri, Bawana, Narela Industrial Area in the national Capital brings out the deplorable fact: how dependent is the junk and recycling industry, especially the IT sector, on the cheapest source of labour, immigrant children.

In these parts in scores of illegal units, involving plastic work, electrical items, embroidery, etc, children as young as six years old, as spotted today during a rescue operation in Nangloi, are subjected to hard work, hazardous in nature and very often at paltry remuneration or no wages.

In fact, it would not be without the help of tender hands of such children, who fall prey to the promises of touts, known as "chacha or mama" that scores of illegal factory units could be running here.

In one such electronic scrap shop in Nangloi, as many as 17 children were rescued today ahead of World Day Against Child Labour by a joint raid team, comprising the Delhi task force, police of Punjabi Bagh area and child rights activists.

In this instance too, the children were trafficked from the remote areas of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and made to work for over 12 hours for these scrap dealers.

"I was brought here by a man in my village. I detach the parts of this machine and stay in the factory only," said the six-year-old who had the least idea that he was involved in the segregation work involving health hazards.

Owners hire children for segregating these electronic items which include exposure to many dangerous metals like lead, silicon, toxicated plastic and chemicals that damage brain, skin etc. In Nangloi alone, nearly 1,000 scrap stores are running.

DU strike: Two NSUI activists hospitalised
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 11
The indefinite hunger strike by the Delhi University Students Association and some activists of the National Student Union of India at Delhi University today turned into a headache for the applicants who visited the north campus today.

The strike into its fifth day turned into a massive protest by the supporters after the health of a couple of striking activists started deteriorating. Two NSUI activists were admitted to hospital as well.

DUSU president Ajay Chhikara had also been advised immediate hospitalization though he refused any medical aid till their demands were met. The DUSU has made it clear that if the DU administration does not heed to the demands of the strikers, there will be severe consequences in the coming days in Delhi University.

The union is on strike demanding a fair and transparent online admission process wherein outstation and rural candidates can easily fill in the forms free of charge. Currently, online applicants have to submit either a demand draft of Rs 100 in the name of the university or make a payment of Rs 20 via the online payment gateway.

DUSU activists today gathered at the arts faculty, shouted slogans and marched around the university. The protest march culminated in the Ring Road while hundreds of activists blocked the Ring Road near metro station for hours. They were led by the MCD councillor and ex-DUSU president Amrita Dhawan and other NSUI activists. The angry NSUI activists then burnt the effigy of the vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh and shouted slogans at proctor's office.
