26 child labourers rescued from metal units
New Delhi, June 12 Among the victims, 19 children were working in the garment industries where they were involved in zari (embroidery) and stitching of cloth and seven children were found to be exposed to health risks working in metal polishing units. In April-May, among the total of 172 children rescued in 10 raids, what is worrisome is that many of them reported health problems in the initial medical test, with 15-20 per cent being those diagnosed with severe diseases such as TB, eye problems, fracture, skin cancer, etc. Officials involved in the rescue, said that in scorching summer, children (below 13) were locked in dingy compartments where they were forced to work with harmful acids and poisonous gases in a temperature as high as 43 degree Celsius. In the raid, carried by the district labour force, 13 employers were arrested and 11 establishments sealed. However, the police need to tackle it with an organised crime perspective going forward with an immediate crackdown in the states involved in regular and large-scale trafficking of people. With the city witnessing a continuing influx of children as work force, a point of worry, it is only a multi-directional approach that can help combat the issue, said child rights activists. There have been innumerable raids in several areas, still not much has been done for checking these trafficking rings that supply children. Consequently, poor families who nurture the hope of a better life, with basic needs, push their children into this vicious cycle--unknowingly. "Despite the directions of the High Court, the behaviour of the police was quite casual and unsupportive. It is shameful that children are still being rescued on a daily basis," said Kailash Satyarthi, founder of Bachpan Bachao Andolan. According to activists, the government needs to combat this problem first by reaching at the organised groups involved in the business of human trafficking. As of now, the focus has been merely on the demand that generates the entry of child labour in these industries while the supply chain that is pushing thousands of innocents every month is largely being left out, said Rakesh Senger of BBA. |

New Delhi, June 12 The decisions were taken in a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Besides, the specialized health care in cardiology, nephrology, urology, cancer, renal transplant, gastroenterology and services in respect of anesthesiology, radiology, pathology, microbiology, etc. will be provided. The commissioning of the two super specialty hospitals in West and East Delhi would go a long way in saving valuable lives of a large number of critical patients. The hospital at Janak Puri has been constructed over an area of 8.82 acre with a total cost of Rs 72 crore. At present, OPD services are being provided in the six-storey hospital building. The Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital at Tahirpur has been constructed over an area of 13 acres with a cost of Rs 88 crore. |

Outstation students take long to find their feet
New Delhi, June 12 "The university features a strong presence of several student communities from Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, northeast states, Bihar, international students and many others. Student associations from most states are very active in the university. They keep a track of incoming students in the university and brief them on the possible problems they may face in the coming months. Even with all the help available, the stereotypes, the language barriers, the high cost of living and the Delhi attitude is a bit too much for the applicants for the first couple of months," said a Delhi University Student's Association team member. This year as well, armed with their marksheets and other documents, thousands of outstation candidates have come to Delhi University in large numbers, determined to survive the admission season with a positive outcome. "For most outstation students, the biggest challenge is to hunt for accommodation near the university at affordable prices. While many students manage to get hostel accommodation at colleges, they still need a back-up option in case there is any problem with hostel allotments," said Deputy Dean Welfare, Gurpreet Singh Tuteja. "I have been looking for paying guest accommodation till the hostel lists are put up by the end of July. Many families have refused me because I am a Kashmiri. For a place near north campus, I can shell out Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 per month," said Javed Iqbal who scored 93% in his class XII boards and expects to find a seat at Kirori Mal College. Others like Simi Joshi from Kalka, Himachal, said, "I am trying to understand the public transport system. The worst is when autowalas know that it's getting dark, so we wouldn't have much option than paying them extra money. DTC bus routes are also tricky." Girl students face much more problems in the city. From men leering at them in DTC buses to girls giving them ice cold looks, judging their apparel, outstation girl students find it much hard to find their comfort zone. Parveen Lamba from Moga, Punjab, is an athlete and wishes to pursue history (Hons) from Lady Shri Ram College. "Girls at colleges like LSR, Miranda House assume a snobbish air and do not appreciate the simple clothes that we wear. The Punjabi tone that reflects in the way we speak English or Hindi is also looked down upon. But still, we have to stay focused on why we are here," she said. |
Automated multi-level parking lot in CP
New Delhi, June 12 Inaugurated by Home Minister P. Chidambaram, the parking lot has been constructed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) project with real estate company DLF at an approximate cost of Rs 120 crore. With 10 floors, the Capitol Point is spread on a total area of 65,504 sq m and a built-up area of 3,65,289 sq ft with a total of 11 levels, including basement which is used as the parking bay. The first floor of the parking will be used for the commercial activities and other, second to nine floor, for the parking of 1,408 vehicles at the charges of Rs 10 per hour. This system provides state-of-the-art security check and car scanning technologies with improved security and safety for parking of the cars in minimum space, said officials of the NDMC. The system provides parking solutions to huge number of vehicles coming to Connaught Place. Sarojini Nagar multi-level car parking project is already commissioned with a capacity of 824 cars. While the Kasturba Gandhi Marg parking project work will be started soon, said NDMC chairperson Archana Arora. "It is estimated that approximately 1,000 vehicles are being registered in Delhi everyday and about 15 lakh people commute to commercial complex and government offices in the NDMC area. The only alternative is to improve the utilisation of available space by development of this type of multi-level car parking projects," said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. She also suggested that the NDMC and DLF should start eco-friendly shuttle bus service from this parking point to Connaught Place and their surrounding market for maximum effective utilisation of this parking facility. People can avail themselves the parking service after buying a "car-park-card" and leaving the car at the basement. The mechanical system would then take over and park it automatically. |
