Power cuts get worse

Immediately after the civic elections in the city concluded on Sunday, the power situation, which was already precarious ever since two 100 MVA transformers were damaged in a massive fire at the 220 KV Lalton substation, took a turn for the worse.

Ludhiana, June 12
Thieves struck at the house of Daljit Singh, a retired Deputy Jail Superintendent, on Tajpur Road today and decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees.

Babus want subordinates to arrange for labour for kin

It’s not official, but bureaucrats have ordered officials working under them to arrange for migrant labourers for sowing paddy for their near and dear ones. Woman killed in building collapse

In a freak incident, a 35-year-old woman died after a portion of a dilapidated building fell on her in Chaura Bazar here today. The victim has been identified as Surita, a resident of Tibba Road, who was shopping along with her sister-in-law Meera in the evening.

Motorcyclist crushed to death
Ludhiana, June 12
A 47-year-old man was crushed to death under a speeding car in the Ladhowal area here last night. The incident took place when the victim, identified as Bachittar Singh of Bagga Khurd, was returning home on his motorcycle after visiting some relatives in Phillaur.

Youth beaten to death by uncle
Khanna, June 12
A youth from a nearby village, Rampur, was allegedly beaten to death by his uncle and six others last evening following a land dispute. The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Manjinder, alias Manohar Singh, while the accused have been identified as Bachan Singh, Amarjit Singh, Mukhtiar Singh, Hardeep Singh, Kamaljeet Singh, Pardeep Singh and Jang Singh.

Admn’s orders remain on paper
Ludhiana, June 12
The orders issued by the district administration to the police heads for registration of criminal cases against those farmers who had failed to remove encroachments along berms of rural link roads in the district still remain on paper, and nothing worthwhile has been done in this regard till now for the simple reason that political leaders have adopted a "lenient" view towards the "unlawful occupants" with eyes on the vote bank.

An overspeeding car turned turtle on a road near Jagraon Bridge here today. The driver lost control over the vehicle while taking a sharp turn near Master Tara Singh College for Women. The car toppled and turned turtle. Three persons were travelling in the car.

Granthi commits suicide
Ludhiana, June 12
A 32- year-old granthi allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at a gurdwara located in Amarpura near the Civil Hospital here today.

Young councillors, who have made it to the Ludhiana municipal corporation remained the hot topic during the SAD-BJP meeting held here today. Almost all speakers, who addressed the meeting held at PWD minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon's residence, emphasised that as a large number of youngsters had been elected as the councillors, they needed to serve the residents in a better manner.

Panic gripped Jalalaldiwal village near Raikot when a partially naked body of a youth was found in the fields of the village situated on the Ludhiana-Bathinda highway yesterday.
