Tough fight for DU: 1,46,800 forms for 54,000 seats
New Delhi, June 18 The last-minute rush was maddening, with the counters working round the clock and even opening past their 1 pm deadline, making sure that every candidate present there has submitted their form. Today, over 30,000 forms were submitted over the counter, while over 10,000 forms were submitted online. Rush was witnessed more so on the counters in the university, in comparison to the post offices. Even as the university started online submissions for the first time ever, the total number of submissions failed to hit the expected figures, more so due to the initial glitches that marred the process during the first week of form submission. Maximum forms have been submitted over the counters at the university. "A total of 1,03,500 forms have been submitted over the counter during the last 15 days. Another 43,300 applications have been received online this year. Both combined, this is the highest number of forms received by the university till date. Last year, we did not have the pre-admission forms. However in 2010, a total of 1.2 lakh applications were received," said Dean Student Welfare, JM Khurana. "Such rush is usually expected on the last day. We decided not to close down the counters till everyone present at our center had submitted the form. We did not want any student to return home without their form being submitted," said an official at Arts Faculty counter, North campus. Along with the deadline for general and OBC candidates, today was also the last day for submission of forms for reserved categories. While a total of 23,650 students in the SC/ST category registered themselves vying for nearly 12,000 seats. In the physically handicapped (PH) category, the university saw 501 students registering themselves for admissions to a total of 1,620 seats in the category. "The number of registrations is less than the total number of seats in the PH category. Among the 500 registrations received, 199 students are visually impaired, 29 hearing impaired, and 247 with loco motor disability. For the first time, 10 to 15 per cent of the candidates opted for the Science stream. Usually, the PH category students apply for commerce and humanities courses. The university received 431 registrations last year," Khurana said. With the sale and submission of forms ending today, the university will now declare the first cutoff list on June 26. This year, the university is coming up with five cutoff lists, the rest of the four on June 29, July 3, July 6 and July 10. |
Long power cuts as lines trip
New Delhi, June 18 Due to technical problems, the major power transmission lines tripped today which caused several hours power cuts in various areas like Mayur Vihar, Kondli, Ghazipur. The residents of south and west Delhi also have to reel from power cuts, said officials of the discoms. The two transmissions, a 220 KV line in the Bamnauli area and another line at Lodhi road had tripped last afternoon, triggering power cuts in some areas. Also, the Badarpur Thermal Power Ltd (BTPS), Noida-Ghaziabad line, had also tripped after a conductor got damaged. The power cuts made the life difficult for the people in the sweltering heat as the maximum temperature today was recorded at 37.2° C. The power demand is less than Friday's peak of 5,265 MW, but still considerably high, said power officials. Due to the searing heat, the power demand went up, but yesterday being a Sunday, all offices and commercial establishments were closed, so the demand was not that high, said the official. However, the weather officials have predicted a thundery development for tomorrow, while maintaining that the temperature will continue to rise at 41° C. |
‘Much water wasted in leakage’
New Delhi, June 18 Delhi unit chief of the BJP, Vijendra Gupta said the Haryana government claimed that it supplied the full share of Delhi, but the city government accused it of failing to supply sufficient water. During the last ten years, the population of Delhi has increased immensely, but the government has done nothing for the additional supply of water and power, Gupta said. He said that Delhi's present requirement is to the tune of 1150 MGD of water while the state government manages to arrange 850 MGD from all its sources. Of this, 50 per cent goes waste due to leakage. The pipelines laid by the DJB leak at various points. The pipes burst time and again and 50 per cent of water is wasted due to leakage. The DJB and the water mafia are responsible for this wastage to a great extent. Water is stolen in the midway. Many people are earning crores of rupees by selling the stolen water through tankers. The Delhi government has not taken any steps to prevent this leakage during the last 14 years, Gupta said. |
Docs up in arms against clinical establishment Act
New Delhi, June 18 The contentious Act will lead to the closure of single- doctor clinics and small establishments and ruin the prospects of young doctors, expressed a gathering of doctors from Delhi and NCR demonstrating in the national capital today. Importantly, with the Act coming into force, the health sector, which is a state subject till now, will come under the jurisdiction of the Centre, said the president of the Heart Care Foundation Dr KK Aggarwal. According to the doctors, the most objectionable clause in the new Act is that every medical establishment, right from single-doctor clinics to small set-ups or hospitals, will have to stabilise an emergency patient and if any lacuna is found in the treatment, they will have to cough up penalties ranging from Rs 10,000 to 5 lakh. "The medical emergency stabilisation point is just a way to harass medical professionals. If a doctor at a small establishment is not experienced enough to handle an emergency case, the golden hour of the patient may be lost. Further, the Act also entails that a multi-member team, including non-medical members, can barge into the clinics for a random inspection," said Dr Harish Gupta, the president of the Delhi Medical Association (DMA). Apart from this, the proposed National Council for Human Resources in Health (NCHRH) Bill-2011 will hamper medical education as the umbrella Bill will finish the autonomy of individual councils, including the alternate systems of medicine. "The power will shift into the hands of non-medical people, with a deputy commissioner having the authority to interfere over medical issues. This will push up the treatment cost. The Bill is just an attempt to gain control of the health sector, with the powers remaining in the hands of the government nominees and not the elected persons of the fraternity. The action taken by this national commission will not be challengeable in any court of law," doctors stressed. According to the senior vice-president of the DMA Dr AK Israni, in Delhi alone, the proposed Act will put the future of more than one lakh doctors from all forms of medicine in jeopardy, apart from affecting more than 20 lakh healthcare personnel associated with the medical establishments. |
