Fighting terror priority: New chief
New Delhi, June 30 The assertion by the 1976-batch officer comes in the wake of the recent arrest of a suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist allegedly involved in the 26/11 Mumbai massacre. At a press conference held at the Police Headquarters, Kumar said, "We will counter terror by upgrading the elite anti-terror unit-- special cell. We have arrested terrorists, but it is wrong to think that the city is now safe from terror attacks. It is a dynamic situation. We have to keep vigil." Kumar, who was the Joint Commissioner of Police (special cell) in 2002, had supervised the counter-terror operations at Ansal Plaza, Tughlaqabad Fort, Deenpur Village in Najafgarh, Millennium Park and Lotus Temple. Kumar added that there was a need for a "superb" relationship between the public and police. "We will fill the communication gap between the investigating officers and the victims. This way the complainant will know what is happening in his/her case," he said. There would be stronger confidence-building measures between the people and the police, he said. The new Police Commissioner said that prevention and detection of crime and maintenance of law and order, including the safety of the women, were also important challenges for the force. When asked for his opinion about Delhi being termed the rape capital of the country, he said the statistics did not reveal such a situation. "Ninety-five per cent of the rape cases are committed by the victims' kin. Also, most women who work late at night reach home safely. But we will ensure that the patrolling parties stay alert and pay attention to the complaints of women," said Kumar. Kumar further said that all the accident zones would be identified and steps taken to make them safer. "We will increase the presence of traffic policemen in the areas where traffic-related crimes are rampant," he added. All the pending proposals related to procuring equipment, including vehicles and gadgets, for the modernization of the law-enforcing agency would be pursued, Kumar said. Meanwhile, outgoing Police Commissioner BK Gupta during his farewell speech at the New Police Lines said the constables were the real heroes. "The constables have to be treated with respect. They are the ones who work in 45 degree C. It is easy to talk about policing in AC rooms, but we have to understand the constables’ problems," he said. |
Power subsidy may continue: CM
New Delhi, June 30 A decision on the subsidy would be taken during the next Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said. Sheila Dikshit said this on the fourth day of the eight-day district-wise bhagidari workshop. Around 800 resident welfare association (RWA) representatives from the north-east district of the city participated in the workshop today. The representatives submitted several suggestions for improving the situation of their localities. Dikshit assured them that concrete steps would be taken about the suggestions within a fortnight. Lauding the role of RWAs, Sheila Diskhit said the development of the city had been accelerated beacuse of inputs given by them. Supply to areas near Okhla to be hit today

Kalkaji, Chitranjan Park, Greater Kailash I and II, Govindpuri, East of
Kailash, Alaknanda, Okhla Industrial Area and adjoining areas. The power demand of the city in the past 24 hours was 5,363 MW. Of the total demand, 1,261 MW was drawn from generating stations in Delhi while 4,102 MW from central sector stations. |

Change of bus stops causes chaos at railway station
New Delhi, June 30 This change has been made after a proposal was submitted by the Delhi Traffic Police to the Delhi Transport Corporation in consultation with the Northern Railway. An official of the Railway Protection Force S. Kamal said that this has been done for 15 days on trial to regulate the traffic as there is jam on the main road during the peak hours every day. If the shifting is found successful, the plan will continue. As Saturday and Sunday are lean days, the picture will be clear on Monday. The Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police Force and Delhi police are controling the traffic now. ASI Phool Chand of Delhi Traffic Police said that there is some relief today, but the real picture will be clear on week days. Only the buses are diverted to the station premises. Light vehicles are passing through the main road. As today is the first day, the bus drivers are not aware of the change in the route. They insist on going through the old route. The DTC authorities should publicise the plan of the traffic police. Joint Commissioner of Police Satyendra Garg was not available for the comment. Narender Kumar, who came in the morning from Alipur village, said that passengers waited for buses for half an hour. There was nobody to inform them about the change in the route. All the buses from Outer Delhi and East Delhi have their bus stops on the main road. The authorities should have informed the passengers about the route changethrough newspapers or other media, he said. Suresh Kumar, who had to go to Seemapuri, waited for 30 minutes in the afternoon at the old bus stand. Then a bus conductor told him that the buses were going from inside the station premises. |
Munna Bhai MBBS in police net
New Delhi, June 30 According to DCP Chhaya Sharma, Pawan Kumar (22), Vikas Kaushik (26) and Sukhbeer Yadav (24) were held. They hail from Haryana. Sharma added that Pawan Kumar is a son of a retired army official and pursuing his BSc in second year from a reputed college in Delhi. Vikas Kaushik is a final year Bachelor of Ayurveda and Medicine student in Haryana. Sukhbeer Yadav is in the second year of MBBS in Ambala. They were held on a complaint by Anup Bhaumik, the secretary of the Veterinary Council of India. Bhaumik told the police that the council had conducted the AIPVT on May 14, 2011. The counselling of successful candidates was held in July and August last year, Bhaumik told the police. The identities of the candidates had been verified by a forensic expert by matching their handwriting, signatures and thumb impressions found on their answer sheets with those obtained during the counselling session, said Bhaumik. "The identity of Pawan Kumar could not be established. The forensic expert said Kumar is not the same candidate who had appeared in the examination. The council had first gone to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in August which advised it to approach the local police to get a case registered against suspected candidates," said Sharma. The police nabbed Kumar at Bhiwani in Haryana. He confessed to have committed the crime. His accomplices Vikas Kaushik and Sukhbeer Yadav were also arrested. "Kumar disclosed that he wanted to clear the veterinary test at all costs. He discussed this with his friend Kaushik, who told him that he knows an MBBS student, Sukhbeer Yadav. Kaushik demanded Rs 4 lakh for the act of impersonation," said Sharma. Kumar paid Rs 50,000 in advance. On the day of the exam, Kaushik made Yadav appear for the entrance test in place of Kumar. |
