New Delhi, June 29
On the first day of admissions under the second cutoff list at Delhi University today, students thronged the colleges for admissions and withdrawals.

Sri Ram College of Commerce which had shut the doors to BCom (Hons) in the second list, witnessed seven withdrawals in Economics (Hons).

Ramjas College admitted a total of 184 students.

"We have till date admitted 820 students against 1,400 seats. Looking at the rush, admissions to most courses are expected to wind up by the second list. We have over-admitted students in BA programme," said college principal Rajendra Prasad.

At Hindu, seats in History (Hons) have not been filled so far. A total of 15 admissions have taken place till now.

"We have already admitted 840 students. There are 740 seats at the college. In BCom, we have admitted 55 students against 52 seats, and in Economics (Hons), we have admitted 51 students against 62 seats," said principal Pradyuman Singh.

DU advises students to take admission in the college they think is best for them in the first list, so that in case the consecutive lists fail to meet their expectations, they still have a seat.

After the list was announced today, a few of the most coveted courses, including History, BCom and Physics (Hons), are still available in some colleges. Hence, a number of students turned up today to cancel their admissions and again apply for the course and college of their choice in the second list.

More withdrawals and reshuffling will take place over the next week.

"We just advise students that before their withdrawal from one college, they should get the admission form from the college of their choice. The college will give them a day's time to furnish the original documents which can be easily collected from the previous college. However, students should not try to block seats in two colleges otherwise their admissions will stand cancelled," said Deputy Dean Student Welfare, Gulshan Sawhney.

Power tariff hike: BJP supporters burn effigies
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 29
The BJP today staged demonstrations at 25 places in Delhi to express its anger against the hike in power tariff and burnt effigies of the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, and the DERC and raised anti-government slogans.

President of the Delhi unit of the BJP, Vijender Gupta and Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Legislative Assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra led the demonstrations of the party workers at the DERC office.

A delegation under the leadership of Gupta asked the chairman of the DERC, P.D. Sudhakar, on the justification of increasing power tariff. When the audit has not been completed for the year 2011-12 of the power companies, on what ground the power tariff was hiked, Sudhakar was asked.

Vijender said that the DERC chairman could not give a satisfactory reply.

The BJP leader condemned the statement of the Chief Minister that the increased hike in power tariff would not be rolled back. He said that this was a despotic step and slap on the face of the people.

Gupta demanded that the Comptroller and Audit General should audit the accounts of the power companies. The Central Bureau of Investigation should probe the alleged bungling by the companies. The DERC and power companies should be under the jurisdiction of the RTI, he said.

By increasing power tariff for the fourth time, the government and the DERC have changed the privatisation of power into commercialisation. The Delhi government is exploiting the people and benefiting Tata and Reliance companies. The entire Delhi is agitated over the tariff hike, said Malhotra.

The BJP will soon call a meeting of all the Resident Welfare Associations to pressurise the government into rolling back the hiked tariff.
