2 killed in mishap
: Two persons were killed in separate accidents here on Friday. A speeding private bus rammed into a motorcycle near Badkal flyover killing the pillion rider. The victim's elder brother, who was driving the motorcycle, was injured in the incident. However, the driver has been arrested. In another accident, a dumper loaded with construction materials ran over a labourer crushing him to death and injuring another in the NIT area. The driver of the dumper fled the scene.

Kaithal
3 get 7-yr jail
: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge RS Choudhry awarded seven years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each to three persons in a robbery case. SP Kuldip Singh said here on Thursday that Bijender Kumar of Dhanouri village was coming to Kaithal on his motorcycle on October 7, 2009. The three accused forcibly stopped him and looted Rs 2,000, a cellphone and a wallet at gunpoint. After perusal of evidence and examining witnesses, the court held all the three guilty under Section 397 of the IPC and sentenced them accordingly.

Three held
: The police has arrested three persons near Palwal, two km from here, on Thursday and recovered a .315 bore country-made pistol, two live cartridges and a dagger from their possession. District police chief Rakesh Kumar Arya said the arrested persons had been identified as Snadeep Kumar, Anil and Rahul. He said during interrogation they confessed that they were plotting crime.

Power tariff hike
: The state unit of the CPM has opposed the increase in power rates by the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam. It has demanded an immediate withdrawal of the hike orders. Describing the hike as sudden and arbitrary decision of enhancement in the name of fuel surcharge, the party said it was totally unacceptable. Party state secretary Inderjit Singh said the power rates were hiked only during April last and there was no need or justification to burden the consumers already suffering due to continued inflationary conditions.

In-laws booked
: Shashi Devi (25), wife of Suresh Kumar, set herself on fire after sprinkling kerosene at Rajgarh village, 15 km from here, on Wednesday. She succumbed to her burns in a private hospital here on Thursday evening. On the complaint of the victim’s father, Hari Pal, the police registered a case of abetment to suicide against husband Suresh Kumar, father-in-law Vijay Singh and mother-in-law Anokha Devi . Hari Pal complained that as Suresh, a liquor addict, used to treat his daughter cruelly, she was forced to take the extreme step. The victim is survived by two sons.

BILASPUR
Power bills: The nagar parishad here has expressed its inability to clear the increasing power bills of street lights of the electricity board here and has urged the Chief Minister to waive off this pending amount of Rs 1.15 crore and provide essential relief to the parishad. A deputation of the parishad, led by its president Rajni Sharma, has met the Chief Minister in this regard. A memorandum was submitted to the Chief Minister. He assured to look into the matter and do the needful at the earliest.

Jewellery returned: A Parwanoo-based family of Gaurav Sethi was going to Kullu-Manali. They stopped for dinner at Sharma Green Dhaba here on Wednesday night. While returning they forget their bag carrying ornaments and cash worth Rs 4 lakh there. When they reached Kullu they tried to locate the bag. BS Thakur, ASP, said on Thursday that Sethi informed the police about the matter. It was at 12.30am when Ramesh Chand, HC, rushed to the dhaba and took the bag in his custody from the dhaba owner who had kept the same to return to its owner.

One arrested: The police here has arrested Rup Lal (19) of Nakrana village and has detained two other minor boys of Chilt village and Kamandwala village of the Naina Devi area, respectively, after they allegedly gang-raped a girl (20) of an adjoining village on Thursday. The police has got the three medically examined at nearby Ghwandal health centre while the girl has been brought here for her medical examination. The medical examination has confirmed rape.

Driver held: The police has arrested a truck driver, Pravin Kumar, for killing Jai Lal of the Dholera sector in the town at Shahid Kumari Champa Park in the main market chowk on the NH No. 21 here on Friday. Reports said the deceased was crossing the road when the accident occurred. The deceased was under depression since the past years and was in the habit of roaming about aimlessly in the town. The police has impounded the truck. A case has been registered.

Saach Pass attracts tourists
: With snow on the Chamba-Killar highway, passing through high-altitude snowy cliffs of the Saach Pass (4,413 metres), having been cleared a couple of days ago, tourist vehicles have now started plying across the Pangi tribal valley in Chamba district. Official sources said here on Friday that tourists were enjoying the landscape with huge deposits of snow at the base of steep cliffs in the Saach Pass ranges. Tourists were coming from various parts of the country.
