Nearly 25 girl students, a majority of them hostel residents, of SPN GNM School of Nursing fell ill allegedly after consuming a stale sweet dish. Besides the girls, a hostel warden, two teachers, two peons and certain other employees were also taken ill. The incident came to light after certain students’ parents, after receiving information from their daughters and management of the nursing institute, reached a charitable hospital, and narrated the incident to mediapersons. The nursing institute and the hospital are being run by Swami Parma Nand (SPN) Trust. The hospital management, however, attributed the incident to “heat wave”. Satish Aggarwal, a trustee of the SPN Trust, claimed that the girls had fallen ill due to severe heat.

The affected students, who are undergoing treatment at the hospital, stated that they were served stale “kheer” in the hostel mess on Wednesday noon, which caused them to vomit and led to loose motions in the evening.

An affected employee of the hospital said that there was a function in the institute on July 10 and left-over food and the sweet dish was served to the hostlers in the mess, which led to the problem.

A visit by a Tribune team to the hospital showed that 12 affected girls were undergoing treatment in a ward, while over 15 were discharged and sent back to their homes.
