Christmas celebrated
Hoshiarpur, December 25
Despite chilly weather conditions, Christmas was celebrated with great enthusiasm here today. Members of the Christian community assembled at Mona Memorial Church and offered prayers. A colourful programme was organised to mark the celebration.

Delhi resident injured in firing at Chagran village
Hoshiarpur, December 25
Delhi resident Kanwaljit Kaur (22) was injured when some unidentified masked men fired at her at Chagran village, 7 km from here, on Monday night. Kanwaljit Kaur, who had come to her parents’ house at Chagran village, was returning home through fields along with her mother when some masked persons suddenly appeared before them and fired shots at her.

2 cases of dowry torture registered
Hoshiarpur, December 25
Two cases of torturing and maltreating newlywed women over dowry were reported in the district since Monday evening.

Purse snatched from NRI woman
Phagwara, December 25
Two motorcycle-borne robbers snatched a purse from an NRI woman, Prem Lata, while she was returning home in Hargobind Nagar after visiting a doctor in a rickshaw last evening. The purse contained her British passport, gold jewellery, foreign and Indian currency.

Rs 5.5 lakh snatched
Hoshiarpur, December 25
Two motorcycle-borne men snatched a bag containing Rs 5.50 lakh belonging to Pankaj Salaria of Krishan Colony of Dasuya on Monday. Pankaj Salaria of Krishan Colony, Dasuya, had sold his car for Rs 6.10 lakh. The buyer gave him Rs 5.50 lakh as advance.

AAP forms Hoshiarpur’s executive committee
Hoshiarpur, December 25
In an open session, the Aam Adami Party (AAP) formed its executive committee of the district unit of Hoshiarpur today. Naveen Jerath, member of the national executive of AAP, said Balbir Singh, Ravi Kumar, Sandip Sharma, Sunita, Kamljit Bangar, Ajay Saroch, Shingara Singh, Vanarsi Dass, Pardeep Dogra and Baljinder Singh were elected members of the district executive unanimously.

They also exchanged greetings with each other and distributed sweets etc. Free community kitchen was also organised on the occasion.

Delhi resident injured in firing at Chagran village

Hoshiarpur, December 25
Delhi resident Kanwaljit Kaur (22) was injured when some unidentified masked men fired at her at Chagran village, 7 km from here, on Monday night.
Kanwaljit Kaur, who had come to her parents’ house at Chagran village, was returning home through fields along with her mother when some masked persons suddenly appeared before them and fired shots at her.

She was injured in the firing and was admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

The Chhabewal police has registered a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

The police has started investigation.

2 cases of dowry torture registered

Hoshiarpur, December 25
Two cases of torturing and maltreating newlywed women over dowry were reported in the district since Monday evening.
In her complaint, Mandeep Kaur of Laksian said just eight months into marriage, her husband Sunny Mehta of Chansu Brahmna tortured and maltreated her for dowry. He had been forcing her to bring Rs 5 lakh and a new car from her parents.

In another case, Amrit Jassal of Usman Shaheed alleged that her husband, Gurpreet Singh of Goraya Colony in Mukerian, had been torturing her for dowry since her marriage in February this year.

The Mahilpur and Dasuya police have registered separate cases under Section 498 A of the IPC in this connection.

Rs 5.5 lakh snatched

Hoshiarpur, December 25
Two motorcycle-borne men snatched a bag containing Rs 5.50 lakh belonging to Pankaj Salaria of Krishan Colony of Dasuya on Monday.
Pankaj Salaria of Krishan Colony, Dasuya, had sold his car for Rs 6.10 lakh. The buyer gave him Rs 5.50 lakh as advance.

After getting the money, he along with his friend Ashutosh had gone to the Tehsil Complex. While returning home, two youths on a motorcycle appeared and snatched the bag with Ashutosh and fled.

The police has registered a case and has launched an investigation.

NRI’s house burgled

Phagwara, December 25
The house of an NRI, Kulwinder Singh, was burgled at Dhadhey village last evening. He was in the fields when burglars entered his house, ransacked it and decamped with valuables, including 6 tolas of gold and cash. The police has registered a case. — OC

AAP forms Hoshiarpur’s executive committee

In an open session, the Aam Adami Party (AAP) formed its executive committee of the district unit of Hoshiarpur today.

The executive committee would elect district coordinator, secretary and treasurer. Vijay Walia, a well-known social activist, had been elected as District Lokpal of the party.
