Amritsar, December 12
Even though Ranjit Singh Rana, the expelled SAD leader who allegedly shot ASI Ravinder Pal Singh, had no criminal record, he was quite unpopular for anti-social activities in the area.

Fear-gripped residents of the area were ready to talk about his "activities" but on the condition of anonymity.

As he enjoyed political patronage, his supporters used to encourage him to indulge in nefarious activities like eve-teasing, threatening or harassing the inhabitants of the area, they said.

The money and power had gone to his head, said residents. "His supporters indulge in eve-teasing so often that women folk hesitated to come out of their residences. Repeated complaints to the police evinced no positive response. The victims got nothing more than mere assurances from the police. That why the people refrained from reporting the matter to the police," said an inhabitant.

"This must have been one of the reasons that he does not have his name in the police diary," quipped another resident.

The residents are feeling a sigh of his relief after he and his accomplices were arrested by the police.

One of the residents said since the day Rana was arrested, not even a single untoward incident had occurred in the area.

"His supporters who used to harass the people on one pretext or other at the behest of Rana might have gone underground now. Anti-social elements who enjoyed his patronage and were involved in drug peddling and bootlegging have eloped," said another resident.
