Jalandhar, December 5
A two-day training programme for 27 women councillors of Municipal Corporation (MC) concluded at the Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MAGSIPA) here today.

Dr Usha Kapoor, Principal, Guru Nanak Dev University College, spoke on "Fundamental rights of women in Constitution of India". She apprised the councillors of their duties as women representatives of the society. She urged them to personally visit the residents of the locality and interact with young women and girls guiding them about their social responsibilities while also making them aware of their rights.

Retired executive officer R.P. Sethi delivered a lecture on "Contribution of women in urban local bodies". Former Assistant Commissioner of the MC D.P. Gupta spoke on "Smooth conduct of MC meetings".

Aruna Arora, a Congress councillor, said she learnt of a very interesting law point as per which one-third of councillors could meet the Mayor in the event of no meeting being convened by him for quite sometime and give him one-month notice to call House. “We were told that if he did not respond, we could go ahead with the meeting on just one point and even pass a resolution on the same,” she said, adding that it was a good learning experience.
