Jind rally a damp squib: Oppn
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 26
While the INLD is gloating over the success of yesterday’s Jind rally, being dubbed as one of the biggest rallies ever organised in Haryana, the Opposition parties are describing the event as “disappointing”.

In a statement issued here today the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, alleged that official machinery was blatantly misused for organising the rally. The organisers, he alleged, did not spare even school buses, putting children to great harassment. At many places, even vehicles carrying patients were taken to the police stations for carrying people to Jind.

A former Haryana Congress President, Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewala, and RPI MLA Karan Singh Dalal also levelled similar allegations.

All three leaders criticised Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala for not making any concrete announcement regarding relief to farmers, who had been badly hit by drought. Mr Chautala had failed to raise even the demand of an early announcement of the minimum support price for paddy and other kharif crops, in the absence of which farmers were forced to make a distress sale of their produce.

While appreciating Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh for forcefully raising the demand for the MSP, Mr Hooda and Mr Surjewala said Mr Chautala’s silence on the issue was mysterious. They said though the INLD was supporting the BJP Government at the Centre, Mr Chautala had not brought any package for the farmers from Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, whose praises were sung by the INLD leader untiringly.

Mr Hooda said the fact that residents of Kandela village resorted to a peaceful but forceful protest against the rally proved that despite managing a big crowd, the INLD had lost popular support.

Mr Surjewala said the Central and State Governments had to be forced by the farmers by launching a massive agitation against them. “These Governments do not understand any other language,” he added.

Mr Dalal demanded that the government should issue a White Paper on the expenditure incurred on the Jind rally and how it had been met. He said the treatment meted out to senior Haryana ministers, like Mr Sampat Singh and Mr Dhir Pal, was outrageous. “If these ministers have any self-respect, they should quit the Cabinet,” he said.

Demanding a CBI inquiry into the rally, Mr Dalal alleged that the posters of the rally were printed at Government Press. He also alleged that the MP son of the Chief Minister, Mr Ajay Singh Chautala, addressed inmates of the Jind jail in an unauthorised manner.

BMS holds protest rally
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 26
The Haryana Government has not taken care of the interests of the workers during the past few years. Instead of facing the “court of workers,” the government was playing gimmicks by organising programmes like “Sarkar aap ke darbar”. Such programmes had no meaning for workers who were not even getting minimum wages as per the Labour Act, said State General Secretary of the Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh, Mr Jang Bhadur Singh, here today.

Speaking at a protest rally, he called upon the workers to strongly oppose the state government’s policy of contractual labour and closure of various departments. The state level protest rally was organised at Sector 17 in front of the office of the Labour Commissioner.

The National Secretary of the BMS, Mr Uday Patwardhan, alleged that the government policies over the past five decade had created widespread unemployment among rural and urban areas. The state and central governments, he felt, were working under the pressure of the IMF and the World Bank.

Speaking on the occasion, State Secretary of BMS, Mr Pawan Kumar, said, the Haryana government had not even implemented the Minimum Wages Act, according to which workers should be paid Rs 3,000 per month in the state.

Distress sale of paddy on
Our Correspondent

Karnal, September 26
Farmers in the bowl of Haryana comprising the areas of Karnal, Assandh, Nissing, Taraori, Ladwa, Pehowa, Kurukshetra and Guhla-Cheeka areas are resorting to distress sale of paddy in the grain markets. A wave of discontentment and anger is sweeping the farmers because of non-declaration of minimum support price (MSP) by the Union Government so far.

The farmers have been hit by double tragedy. Firstly, because of drought they had to spend Rs 30000 per acre more according to Mr Shingara Singh, a farmer of Bhour-Saidan village. Secondly, as they are unable to keep their mature paddy standing in the fields because of the uncertain weather, they have no alternative but to bring the paddy to the market and sell it at very low rates. As the government agencies have not yet entered the market, they have to sell paddy on far less rates as compared to last year.

Mr Gurdeep Singh, a farmer of Dhani Rampura, told this correspondent in Pehowa grain market that he had to sell his paddy at Rs 450 per quintal as against Rs 560 last year. Even popular varieties like PR-8 are being sold at this very rate.

Mr Hazara Singh of Samana Bahu in Nilokheri market said by the time the government entered the market, almost half the produce would have been bought by private traders.

The farmers are being fleeced as they cannot store paddy for fear of an increase in the moisture content. Inquiries made at official level show that the paddy arrivals were increasing every day. So far, 2.31 lakh quintals of paddy have reached the markets of Karnal district.

District Food and Civil Supplies office sources say that so far no instructions had been received for starting the purchases.

Fatehabad, September 26
The Akhil Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union, Haryana, has criticised the alleged anti-farmer and anti-farm labourer attitude of the Centre and the state government and demanded immediate relief for those farmers and farm labourers who had been affected by the recent drought. Addressing mediapersons here today, Mr Ram Kumar Bahbalpuria, state president of the union, said due to the poor monsoon almost the whole state was under the impact of drought but the government was projecting its own figures.

Mr Bahbalpuria said installing submersible pumps was not within the reach of farmers and added that due to the “anti farmers” policies of the government over 90 per cent farmers were under debt.

He said it was quite ironical that there were legislations for the safety of animals and birds but the government had failed to make laws for the safety of landless farm labourers even after 55 years of Independence. He added that a rally of the farmers and land labourer organisations would be held at Chandigarh on October 3 and a dharna would also be organised there in this regard.
