Kin of cops killed on duty to get Rs 5 lakh Jhajjar, September 23 This was stated by the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, while addressing a gathering at a state-level War Heroes and Martyrdom Day function here today. He said the state government was taking this step so that the families of the police personnel did not face any financial hardship at a time of crisis. It had also enhanced the financial assistance to ex-servicemen above the age of 60 years and widows of ex-servicemen from Rs 200 to 400 and the war jagir had been increased from Rs 1000 to Rs 5000. He said the state government had great regard for the brave soldiers who had been safeguarding the borders of the country. The government had got 62 gas agencies and 22 petrol stations allotted to the next of kin of Kargil martyrs. Also, the dependents of each such martyr were given Rs 10 lakh as financial assistance whereas the disabled soldiers were given financial assistance ranging from Rs 3 to Rs 6 lakh for their rehabilitation, he added. The occasion coincided with the martyrdom anniversary of great martyr Rao Tula Ram of Ahirwal (Rewari Mahendragarh) area, who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1957 struggle for independence. The Chief Minister said though Haryana had the geographical area of just 1.37 per cent and population of 2 per cent of the country’s total area and population, the state was proud of providing every 10th soldier in the Indian Army. He paid glowing tributes to great martyr Rao Tula Ram and other brave soldiers, on the occasion. He said these freedom fighters had made supreme sacrifices. He said Rao Tula Ram had laid the foundation for India’s first war of independence in 1857. Rao Tula Ram and other martyrs had played a crucial role. He announced that Jhajjar, known as the land of martyrs, would be developed at a cost of Rs 25.15 crore. Earlier, he launched the renovation work of Shaheedi Park, which would be completed at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. He laid the foundation stone of the Rs 11 crore second waterworks, and launched a project for constructing six roads in the National Capital Region (NCR) at a cost of Rs 26.61 crore. Raising the issue of Ms Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin, Mr Chautala said the Congress president would never be acceptable to the Indian masses as she was not rooted in the country’s culture and civilisation. He said Ms Gandhi should never dream of becoming the country’s Prime Minister as she was thoroughly ignorant about the realities of rural India. He also criticised his predecessors Bhajan Lal and Bansi Lal and accused them of having pushed back the development of the state by several decades. During their time, the law and order situation in the state deteriorated badly, he said. He charged that Mr Bansi Lal as Chief Minister had denigrated a martyr like Rao Tula Ram as a traitor and the people of Haryana would never forgive him for that. He said the martyrs did not belong to any particular community but were the pride of the entire nation. There should be no politics over them. Flaying Mr Bansi Lal for his reported statement that he would get the statues of Chaudhary Devi Lal demolished once he came to power, Mr Chautala said he would neither come to power nor this would happen. The Chief Minister honoured freedom fighters and widows of jawans on the occasion.

Bitta criticised Sibal for ‘defending’
a militant Ambala, September 23 Mr Bitta today said he was tipped off by a person in Canada that there was a possible danger to his life. In a communique to the Congress President Ms Sonia Gandhi, Mr Bitta said “A few months ago, I received a ‘fresh threat from Canada, clearly stating that some influential people have gained access within the Congress to conspire and eliminate me and some other party leaders. I was also informed that the conspiracy of the IYC blast of 1993 was also hatched in Canada.” Mr Bitta criticised Congress spokesman, Mr Kapil Sibal, for representing the case of Davinder Pal Singh, a militant who was awarded death sentence by the Supreme Court in the blast case. “The shameful act of defending and protecting a convicted militant, who killed innocent Congressmen, tantamounts to a conspiracy against the Congress and me. Mr Sibal’s efforts to save a militant from death penalty has made me apprehend a grave danger to my life. In fact, a militant managing to access a senior Congress leader is in itself, a dangerous thing, he said. “It is an indicator of a threat to the security of important functionaries of the Congress. Who knows whether godfathers of militants, in India, Canada or somewhere else abroad, may try to reach ‘top targets’ in the Congress. We should not forget that the Congress has already lost two most important personalities, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi”, he said. “There was a conspiracy to eliminate me in 1993, just before he IYC blast, my security was withdrawn. On September 9,1993, I received a secret letter, signed by the then Home Minister, Mr SB Chavan, stating that my security had been withdrawn. Two days later, the powerful blast took place at the IYC headquarters. By God’s grace, I escaped but 35 party people lost their lives,” Mr Bitta said. The letter to the Congress president asked several questions like, who has hired reputed advocate like Mr Sibal? Davinder Pal Singh is in jail. His family members and relatives do not have a known source of income to hire Mr Sibal. The most important question is, who approached Mr Sibal to defend Davinder Pal Singh. Is that person in India or abroad? Or is Mr Sibal doing charity, feeling emotional about a man going to the gallows? I think, as the Congress President you must look into this, urged the letter. |

RSS chief’s remarks criticised Chandigarh, September 23 In a statement issued here today Mr Karambir Singh said before issuing such statements, the RSS should end the ills of the Hindu religion like caste-based discrimination, caste system and rituals. Lakhs of Dalits were feeling suffocated in the Hindu religion because of discrimination and lack of equality. This was the main reason why they were converting to other religions. |
