Traders protest against parking charges

Hundreds of traders and transporters today staged a demonstration at the local Dana Mandi (grain market) to protest against the charging of parking fee. They maintained that since they were already paying 4 per cent tax to the Mandi Board for various services, the parking fee was totally unjustified and uncalled for.

Biomedical waste disposal project begins trial run

The Biomedical Waste Management project has commenced trial run here under which biomedical waste from over two dozen hospitals and nursing homes in the city and nearby towns is being disposed of in accordance with norms prescribed under the Biomedical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 1998 under the aegis of the Environment (Protection) Act 1986.

BKU workers stage dharna, block traffic

30 kg of poppy husk seized
Doraha, September 23
ASI Lekh Raj of Maloud police chowki seized 30 kg of poppy husk from a scooterist at the Siar-Chammat road on Sunday evening. A case has been registered under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

The IFMA Cycle Show which was held from September 12 to 15 at Koln in West Germany seems to have brought only disappointment for exporters of bicycle and bicycle parts from India.

PAU Kisan Mela on  September 24
Ludhiana, September 23
Minister of State for Revenue, Rehabilitation and Agriculture Amarjit Singh Samra will inaugurate the Kisan Mela to be organised by the Punjab Agricultural University at the Regional Research Station, Bathinda, on September 24. Dr Kirpal Singh Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, PAU will preside over the inaugural session.

‘Empower women to curb female foeticide’

Female foeticide is a complex issue. But women who undergo this procedure have quite different perception from what medical professionals, religious leaders, opinion-makers, gate-keepers of society and planners think. Since education, financial well-being, religiosity do not have any impact on the psyche of the women who undergo female foeticide, to combat this menace, the state must empower women by affirmative discrimination in their favour.

A summer sports festival started in the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology on the Gujarkhan campus from today. The teams will be shortlisted through a process of elimination. Presently intra-class matches are in progress in badminton, basketball and table tennis.
