Tremors rattle England
London, September 23
A widespread earthquake shook central England and Wales early today, rattling homes and rousing people from sleep. There were no reports of injuries or serious damage. Worried Britons deluged police and fire stations with calls after the tremor struck shortly before 1 a.m. (0530 IST). The magnitude of the quake, centred at the central England city of Birmingham, was 4.8, said the British Geological Survey. “It’s an extremely large earthquake in UK terms but not large in world terms, we’d only classify it as a light earthquake,” it said.
