Cong threatens stir on cane growers’ dues Chandigarh, August 25 He said the cooperative sector sugar mills alone owed about Rs 40 crore to the cane growers, who were facing a great difficulty dure to the severe drought conditions prevailing in the state. Not only their kharif crop had withered away, they were living from hand to mouth because of financial crunch being faced by them following the non-payment by the sugar mills. Similarly, he said, the government should compel the private sector sugar mills to pay the cane growers along with interest for the delayed period. Mr Hooda said the Chautala Government, which claimed itself to be the champion of farmers, had failed to come to the rescue of the drought-hit farming communities. So far the state government had not paid even a single paisa to the farmers as relief from drought. The government should immediately compensate the farmers whose crops had either been damaged by lack of rains or who had not been able to sow their fields because of the drought. The Congress leader said the government should also evolve a package of relief for landless agricultural labourers, who had been rendered unemployed by the drought. The condition of this section of society was most pitiable. Mr Hooda demanded that 4 per cent local area development tax should be abolished as it had made the Haryana industry uncompetitive vis-a-vis the other states. Meanwhile, there is speculation in political circles about the recognition of Mr Hooda as the Leader of the Opposition by the Haryana Assembly Speaker before the monsoon session opens on September 2. Doubts in this regard have been created by certain decisions taken by the Vidhan Sabha Secretariat. While constituting the Business Advisory Committee for the monsoon session, the Vidhan Sabha has nominated Mr Bhajan Lal on the committee as the Congress representative, though he is no longer the CLP Leader. His resignation from the post of the Leader of Opposition was accepted by the Speaker on August 13. The committee was constituted after that. Since Mr Hooda’s request for recognition as the Leader of Opposition was rejected by the Speaker on the plea that he was yet to be elected as the CLP Leader, the Vidhan Sabha should have nominated Capt Ajay Singh Yadav as the Congress nominee on the Business Advisory Committee. Perhaps the INLD Government wants to delay the facilities to which Mr Hooda is entitled to as the Leader of the Opposition. |

DAV students get B.Ed degrees Ambala, August 25 Saying that it was unfortunate that a few teachers decided to make a controversy out of the issue, he said the decision would not affect the interests of economics and mathematics teachers in any way. Talking to mediapersons in Sohan Lal DAV College here today, he said the economics and mathematics teachers had submitted a representation to him in this regard and he would consider their apprehensions and take a lenient view over their genuine demands. Replying to a question, he said the university had sent guidelines to its affiliated colleges regarding courses under the self-financing scheme. He said the students of those colleges would not be allowed to appear in the examination where the guidelines were not followed in a proper way. Mr Chaudhry said he had received some complaints that several colleges had not appointed qualified teachers to teach the courses granted to them under the scheme and added that when the colleges were charging a handsome fee from the students they should be provided good infrastructure and facilities. Mr Chaudhry said several job-oriented courses introduced from this session had been getting good response from the students and the newly introduced hotel management course was being appreciated. Replying to a question, he said the syllabus of some of the courses, including BCA, would be revised very soon. When asked whether the university would launch fashion and design course like several other professional institutions, he said, “The university is a service institution.” Later in the convocation function of the college, Mr Chaudhry conferred B.Ed degrees on 250 students. The Principal of the college, Dr D.P.S Asija, and several office-bearers of the management of DAV were also present on the occasion. |

Nayaks
seek SC status in Haryana Chandigarh,
August 25 In Haryana, the Nayak community has many other names —
Heri, Aheri, Aheria and Thori — and 90 per cent of its members live below the poverty line. The community includes tribals who do not have a specific profession and work as casual labourers. Most of them had migrated here from Rajasthan at one time or the other in search of work, as they had no property in Rajasthan. They want Haryana to include them in the Scheduled Castes like what Rajasthan has done, as, so far, the community has been exploited here as merely a vote bank. |
