Abohar, December 19 While he was in the ATM cabin, two persons came on motorcycle bearing registration number PB 02 7822, broke open the lock of the scooter and decamped with the money. DSP Raj Kumar Jalhotra, who reached the spot, said it would be verified whether the number plate was genuine. It appeared that the bikers were chasing the BSF jawan after he had withdrawn money from a bank located in the old city area. As the police was investigating the loot on the college road, a message received from village Shergarh said that bikers have looted Rs 60,000 from a farmer. The CIA staff rushed to the village that forms a part of Balluana segment. The victim, Amar Singh, said he withdrew Rs 60,000 from the Street 10 branch of the Oriental Bank of Commerce in Abohar and boarded a bus for his native village. As he alighted in the Shergarh market, bikers snatched the bag containing cash and fled. He had noticed some unidentified persons using TVS and Discover motorcycles chasing the bus but could not guess that they were miscreants. |

40 youth clubs in Muktsar de-affiliated
Muktsar, December 19 The NYKS has cancelled the affiliation of 40 out of total 45 youth clubs in the district. Now, the NYKS has sought fresh applications from those willing to affiliate their clubs with it, in order to claim monetary benefit. To promote sports in rural areas, the NYKS also distributes sports kits to clubs there. The NYKS aims at identifying areas to harness youth power towards nation-building activities, by opening clubs in villages. Such clubs are voluntary action groups of persons in the age group of 13-35 years and work for community development and youth empowerment. The district coordinator of the NYKS, Jagjit Singh Mann, said, "After the allotment of an office here in August this year, I cancelled the affiliation of nearly 40 youth clubs, which were only named as youth clubs but were being run by persons aged about 50 years." "The rules say youth clubs being run by persons over 35 years of age ought to be de-affiliated. After receiving fresh applications, we have so far affiliated 12 youth clubs in the district," Mann added.

Abohar, December 19 School principal, Dr Parminder Sharma, felicitated the winners today. Team in-charge Poonam Jakhar said Kavita won the long jump event in the Under-19 category while Chanchal Bhadoo emerged as winner in the 400-meter race. In U-17 category, Harpreet Kaur won the events of 100-metre race, discuss throw and hammer throw to clinch the title of the best athlete. — OC |

Held under NDPS Act for carrying contraband
Malout, December 19 A case under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him. Abohar: Two persons have been booked under the NDPS Act after the motorcycle they were riding upon was intercepted near Mehrana village and 25 grams of smack was seized from them. The accused, Lakhwinder Singh of Faqarsar Thehdi in Muktsar district and Kulwant Singh, reportedly disclosed to the police that the smack was purchased from someone in the neighbouring Sadulshehar segment of Sriganganagar. Both the accused have been remanded to judicial custody by a court. — OC |
