NGOs’ stir in Jalalabad
Fazilka, December 13 The department has also transferred five employees of the hospital who had been allegedly vitiating the atmosphere. They were shifted to the other health centres today. Senior Medical Officer Dr Hans Raj Malethia said Sarvan Ram and Gurbax, both class IV employees, laboratory technician Arun Bala and ophthalmic officer Rajinderpal Singh have been shifted to the primary health centre at Jandwala Bhimeshah while staff nurse Tajinder Kaur has been transferred to the community health centre (CHC), Guruharsahai. It has been learnt that the civil administration, health department officials and SAD leaders have been desperately trying to persuade the agitating members to lift their chain hunger strike after the transfer of these staff members. The residents of the town as well as the people in the rural areas have been faceting a shortage of specialist doctors and other medical facilities for over a decade, after the Jalalalabd sub-tehsil was upgraded to a sub-division 15 years back. "After exhausting all other means, the NGOs had to resort to an agitation," said the members of the co-ordination committee of the NGOs, Ranjiv Dahuja and Pawan Kumar. The chain hunger strike entered its ninth day today with about a dozen members of the Khet Mazdoor Union, Auto Mechanic Union and Heaven Morning Club sitting on chain hunger strike today. Ranjiv Dahuja warned that the hunger strike will not end if the government does not assure them in black and white about fulfilling their demands. The main demands of the protesters are upgrading the 24 bed community health centre in Jalalabad to a 100-bed civil hospital, creation of posts of specialists, filling up of vacant posts of paramedical staff, permanent deployment of ambulance drivers, setting up of blood bank, availability of medicines and latest equipment to treat the patients. |

Abohar MC shuts its fire station, staff set to report at Jalalabad
Abohar, December 13 The staff led by fire officer Gurjant Singh has been told to get ready to shift to the high-profile constituency of Jalalabad represented by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. This will help cover the shortage of staff there. The state government had gifted new fire-fighting lorries and other equipment to the Jalalabad Municipal Council. Interestingly, Abohar has got the highest number of cotton ginning and pressing factories in the region. The cash-strapped Abohar Municipal Council has not been able to pay electricity bills for the last five years. The dues have recently been assessed at Rs 4 crore. Sources said the council has to spend about Rs 6 lakh on the maintenance of sewerage and water supply system besides Rs 3 lakh as incidental charges on emergencies. The council has not been able to recover about Rs 6 crore from the residents against dues of water, sewerage, rent and other taxes reportedly due to the interference by politicians. This month, it could not recover the water and sewerage charges as the Punjab and Haryana High Court had quashed the arbitrary increase in charges levied in the past. The amount charged in excess of the previous tariff is being adjusted in the current bills. Most consumers have thus received zero balance bills from the council. The accounts sheet of the council indicates that debts have risen to Rs 10 crore as it is yet to pay Rs 3 crore on account of the employee provident fund and pension contribution. Rs 91 lakh is yet to be paid to the retired staff and the contractors have unpaid bills amounting to Rs 50 lakh. The BJP leaders were generous enough in getting Rs 1.45 crore from the Nangal Council to the Abohar MC as loan to bail out the latter but the amount has risen to Rs 2 crore after calculating the interest on the principal amount. |
