Ravi Mahendru files appeal against cancellation of BJP district president election
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, December 8
Following setting aside of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district president election, Ravi Mahendru, who had been chosen for the post, has filed an appeal on the matter with the party's national election in charge.

Mahendru, who is also an MC councillor, said he had filed his appeal through an email yesterday. "If the all-India election in charge of our party conducts a hearing on the matter, he may call me to New Delhi," he said.

The election held on November 23 has been set aside on the orders of Vinod Sharma, state election in charge, passed on December 5. He had allowed an appeal of another contender SD Chugh, who had challenged the elections.

Mahendru has been saying that he had so far got no orders of the sort from Vinaod Sharma. "It is just through media reports that I got to know that the election had been set aside," he said.

Some BJP leaders have been saying that instead of cancelling elections, the state in charge should have declared Chugh a valid candidate and got the polling done allowing circle presidents to vote for either of the two. The cancellation of elections has put the matter on hold for at least a month and strained the relations between the two groups. Chugh's candidate had been declared invalid by party's state general secretary Manjit Singh Rai on the grounds that he had faked signatures of circle president Joginder Verma. The circle president, however, came in support of Chugh.

Jalandhar, December 8
The craze for special dates seems to be increasing with several couples insisting that their caesarian deliveries be held on the triple 12 date.

While last year 11/11/11 came as a heavenly date bearing six 1s, this time the city residents seem to have been caught with the 12/12/12 fad. So much so that many couples who have their deliveries due around the corner are insisting their gynaecologists to give them 12/12/12 date for the purpose.

Dr Sumel Bath, gynaecologist, said, "I have a couple from Mota Singh Nagar who has been insisting for a c-section on triple 12 date. They have been telling me that their anniversary also falls on that day and they would love to have their baby on the same day. Let's see."

Dr Jasmine Dahiya, infertility specialist, tells that she has at least two such cases lined up which would be delivered on 12/12/12, one of whom could be a delivery of twins. "So far the mothers are stable with 35-week pregnancy over and ready for delivery. Earlier, I had planned another delivery on the date, but it had to be done early," she said.

Several city residents who have their birthdays or anniversaries on December 12 also want to make it big this year. Aditi Madaan, a college lecturer, said she was really excited about her birthday this time since it was coming on 12/12/12. "More than me, it is my daughter Kritika who is excited about the day. She tells me that she was expecting 12 small return gifts on the day. It is a sheer chance that last year, her birthday had fallen on special date 11/11/11."

Sanjha Morcha to hold protests against govt from tomorrow
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, December 8
The Sanjha Morcha, led by the PPP, will start an agitation against the SAD-BJP government from December 10. A decision in this regard was taken in a convention of the Sanjha Morcha, comprising four political parties, PPP, CPI, CPM and Akali Dal Longowal, held at Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall.

The convention was attended by the morcha chairman Manpreet Badal, veteran CPI leader Dr Jogendra Dayal, Akali Dal Longowal leader Gagan Barnala, PPP vice-president Abhay Sandhu and its district chief Dr Navjot Dahiya.

It was decided in the convention that the Sanjha Morcha should fill the vacuum created due to the "inactiveness" of the opposition party Congress in Punjab. That is why, it was decided to hold demonstrations at all the district headquarters of the state between December 10 and 17 against the "lawlessness, imposition of new taxes, prevalence of sand, transport and cable mafia and corruption" in the state.

Manpreet Badal stated during the convention that the Sanjha Morcha would provide Punjabis an alternative to the SAD-BJP alliance and Congress. He flayed the recent Amritsar incident where ASI Ravinder Pal Singh was shot dead by an Akali leader and his associates when he was trying to protect his daughter's honour.

The Sanjha Morcha leaders were of the view that such types of incidents might only be stopped by putting an end to the politicisation of the police.
