Sources said after approval of the Cabinet, the case would come up in the Assembly to accord university status to the SGT Group. Once approved, the SGT University would be the 28th university in the state.

Part of the Dashmesh Educational Charitable Trust, the SGT Group runs several colleges, including medical, management and engineering. Campuses of the group are located near the Sultanpur Wildlife Sanctuary.

A senior official said a large number of colleges and universities had put the state, which was earlier dubbed as educationally-backward, in a pride place among other Indian states. It had also helped the state retain students from Haryana, who earlier moved to other states in pursuit of higher education.

“Haryana’s proximity to the national capital is proving a boon for the state with a large number of private players setting up universities and colleges in the NCR. This has also resulted in students from other states and even abroad coming to Haryana for higher studies, the official added.

Advantage Haryana

  • Strategic location near Delhi gives NCR an edge over other parts of the state
  • Well-connected road and rail links make educational institutions along the highway a profitable business

Sirsa, December 8
The State Crime Branch of the Haryana Police will now investigate the case of a clash between followers of Dera Sacha Sauda and some Sikh organisations opposed to the dera in Sirsa on November 24. The clash had left over 12 persons from both sides injured and seven vehicles torched, forcing the district authorities to clamp a curfew on Sirsa town.

The police had booked 13 named and 1,500 to 2,000 unnamed dera followers under Sections 148, 149 (rioting), 323 (assault), 341 (wrongful restraint), 332, 353 (assault on public servant to deter from official duty), 307 (attempt to murder), 435 (mischief by fire) and 295 (outraging religious feelings), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, Noise Pollution Act and Arms Act in an FIR registered that day.

The criminal case was filed on the complaint of Om Parkash Bishnoi, Executive Magistrate, Sirsa. However, the police is still to arrest any person in this connection.

The district police had invited flak from both the followers of the dera as well as those opposed to them.

While the dera has accused the police of booking innocent persons, including its senior functionaries who were not present at the site of clash, those opposed to the dera alleged that the police was not arresting those named in the FIR.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajshree Singh confirmed today that investigation of the case had been handed over to the State Crime Branch. She said the process of transfer of the case to the State Crime Branch was in progress.
