Yeddy-loyalist minister sacked, MP suspended
Tribune News Service

Bangalore, December 8
Giving a stern warning to ministers and legislators who are flocking to former leader BS Yeddyurapapa, the ruling BJP in Karnataka today sacked cooperation minister BJ Puttaswamy from the state cabinet and suspended Lok Sabha member GS Basavaraj from the party.

The action came a day ahead of Yeddyurappa formally launching his Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) at a public meeting in Haveri, about 350 km north of Bangalore. He quit the BJP and resigned from the Assembly on November 30.

The disciplinary action against the two light-weight party members was announced here by state CM Jagadish Shettar and party's state unit president chief KS Eshwarappa.

Basavaraj is a former Congressman. He joined the BJP before the last Lok Sabha elections in 2009 and represents Tumkur. Puttaswamy, who is a member of the legislative council, had come to the BJP fold from Janata Dal-Secular. Basavaraj and Puttaswamy are staunch followers of Yeddyurappa and have often been attacking both state and central BJP leadership.

The BJP hopes the action against the two will deter other Yedyurappa loyalists from attending the Haveri rally and thus save the government headed by Shettar.

The party has refrained from taking any action against other legislators, including Yeddyurappa's MP son BY Raghavendra, who have been actively helping Yeddyurappa in organising the Haveri show.

Reacting to the action, Yeddyurappa told reporters in Haveri that end of the BJP government in Karnataka was near. He dared his former party to dissolve the Assembly and face people instead of taking action against his supporters in the party. The Assembly's term expires May next.

Though Yeddyuappa has been saying that he has not invited any minister or legislator to attend the Haveri rally, his supporters have been making efforts to get many of them to attend a breakfast meeting in Haveri as a strategy to show the former CM's hold among the BJP legislators.

The BJP has warned that it would take action against even those attending breakfast or tea parties hosted by Yeddyurappa supporters in Haveri on Sunday.

The BJP has a slender majority in the 225-member House. The party has 118 members, including the speaker. It has the support of an Independent who has been rewarded with a cabinet post.

Police custody for Zee editors
Confronted with channel chairman Subhash Chandra
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 8
Two Zee editors, arrested for allegedly trying to extort Rs 100 crore from Congress MP Naveen Jindal’s company through an advertisement agreement, were remanded in police custody for two days today.

Investigators confronted the duo with Subhash Chandra, non-executive chairman of Zee News, and his son Punit Goenka, channel’s managing director, to unravel the conspiracy.

Chandra and Goenka arrived at the inter-state cell of the Delhi Police Crime Branch at Chanakyapuri in the afternoon. They joined the investigation after a Delhi court on December 6 provided them “interim protection” till December 14, meaning the two cannot be arrested till that date.

The arrested duo, Editor of Zee News Sudhir Chaudhary and Editor of Zee Business News Samir Ahluwalia, were taken to Chanakyapuri’s crime branch office at 9.30 pm. They were later confronted with Chandra and Goenka.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Rajiv Mohan had sought three-day police custody of the editors.

“During the police custody, efforts were made to join Zee group chairman Subhash Chandra and Zee Entertainment Enterprises MD Punit Goenka in the investigation, as the accused persons (Chaudhary and Ahluwalia) had to be confronted with them to reach the bottom of the criminal conspiracy,” he said.

Mohan said the alleged extortion bid was not a single person’s decision. “So to unearth the whole conspiracy and to prove that the top Zee bosses are also involved in the conspiracy, we need to confront them with Chandra and Goenka,” he said.

“Custodial interrogation is a must as by that only we can collect evidence in the matter, as the entire case is based on circumstantial evidence. All evidence is with Sudhir, Samir, Chandra and Goenka and we can get it only after confronting them with each other,” said the APP.

He said the two Zee editors and the co-accused, Chandra and Goenka, shared “joint liability”, because it allegedly shows in the telephone record transcript that the editors spoke to their Chairman.

Ansari for 4-pronged attack on graft
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 8
Advocating a four-pronged approach to deal with graft and promote probity, especially in public life, Vice-President Hamid Ansari today underscored the imperativeness of attacking the problem, considering a renewed debate on the issue and India’s “distressing” ranking in the global Corruption Perception Index.

He said the four pillars were ethical training in norms incorporated in a legally enforceable code of ethics; comprehensive protection of human rights; a legal framework and regulatory practices; and laws and procedures that forbid nepotism in all its manifestations.

Delivering the annual Bhimsen Sachar memorial lecture on ‘Virtue in public life’ here, Ansari said these steps would assist the attainment of “excellence” in terms of the duties prescribed in the Constitution emphasising that the endeavour would have to be both individual and collective.
