The multi-tier security during the PGIMER MD/MS entrance exam led to panic among candidates as a majority of them reached the centres without reading the instructions.

Fire breaks out at Nirman Theatre
Chandigarh, December 8
Firefighters try to douse flames at Nirman Theatre, Sector 32, Chandigarh, on Saturday night. A major fire broke out at Nirman Theatre in Sector 32 on Saturday night. The fire that started from the basement spread in the entire theatre within no time. Night show of movie "Son of Sardar" was on when the fire broke out. There were around 10 persons inside the theatre who were rescued by firefighters. The exact reason of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Candidates find paper difficult
Chaos prevails before the PGI MD/MS examination at Shivalik Public School in Sector 41, Chandigarh, on Saturday. Chandigarh, December 8
The candidates, who appeared for the PGI MD/MS entrance examination today, were visiting the city for the second time for the same purpose as the examination held earlier, on November 10, was cancelled following the unearthing of a cheating scam.

Arrangements made, personnel untrained!

The high-tech security arrangements made for the PGI MD/MS examination came to naught at Guru Nanak Khalsa Public School, Sector 30, when the three lady constables deployed at that centre failed to operate the handheld metal detectors.

Cyclist dies in accident
Chandigarh, December 8
A man died after an unknown vehicle hit his cycle near the road dividing Sectors 7/8. The victim, identified as Harday Lal, a resident of Ramdarbar, was declared brought dead at the PGI.

City clubs under scanner

To check whether Central Club and Chandigarh Club are meant for senior citizens, the UT Administration has written a letter to the management of both the clubs to submit details regarding the members of the clubs. The exercise is a part of the move to fix  the lease money for the Central Club and Chandigarh Club.

Veterans, soldiers celebrate anniversary
Chandigarh, December 8
Army Service Corps (ASC), the oldest service of the Indian Army, celebrated its 252nd anniversary at Headquarters Western Command, Chandimandir, today. As part of the commemoration functions, a wreath laying ceremony was held at the Ver Smriti War Memorial to pay tributes to those soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

An eight-year-old male leopard was rescued by a team of the Punjab Wildlife officials this morning from a 22 feet-deep well at Ratta Khera village near Mansa. Later, the leopard was transportedt to the Chhatbir zoo. Before transporting the leopard from the rescue site, the wildlife officials successfully revived the animal with an antidote.

MC fails to recover rent from Verka booths
Chandigarh, December 8
The lackluster approach of the officials of the Municipal Corporation can be gauged from the fact that the civic body is losing Rs 1.9 crore due to the non-recovery of rent from Verka booths in the city. These booths are being run on the corporation's land.

Oil tanker catches fire on P'kula-Barwala road

The busy Panchkula-Barwala road remained blocked for over four hours after a fire broke out in a petrol tanker near Maankiyan village in Barwala this morning. The police swung into action and diverted the traffic from Ramgarh and Barwala towards Dera Bassi.

Artistes display talent at ‘Natyotsav’

The Sambhang Theatre Group organised the 25th one-act play competition, Natyotsav 2012, in memory of young artiste Prabhat at Shivalik Public School here today.

CBI court serves reminder notice on apex court registrar general

In the birbery case of Justice (retd) Nirmal Yadav, a special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation served a reminder notice on the Supreme Court Registrar General for producing the original records, after an application seeking the same was submitted by former Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Nirmal Yadav.

Mercury set to dip during night
Chandigarh, December 8
The temperature in the City Beautiful will play truant for the next couple of days as the mercury will dip during night and increase during day time. As per the Met Department officials the maximum temperature recorded today was 24.9 degree celsius and minimum was 8.6 degree. According to the department, in the next few days, there is no possibility of rain due to which temperature will rise during the daytime and fall at night.

Illegal liquor seized
Dera Bassi, December 8
The Dera Bassi police today arrested a youth and seized 84 bottles of illegal liquor from his possession at Karkour village. He was booked under Section 61-1-14 of the Excise Act.

4 more fraudsters land in police net
Chandigarh, December 8
The accused in police custody at Police Headquarters, Sector 17, in Chandigarh on Saturday. The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the UT Police has arrested four members of the gang that used to dupe copper, brass and aluminium dealers. All accused, who are scrap dealers operating from Jalandhar and Jagadhri, were arrested on the information provided by the key accused, Gurpreet Singh, who was arrested on December 6.

Man arrested for making fake driving licences
Chandigarh, December 8
The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh police has arrested a resident of Attawa village, Chandigarh, for making fake driving licences. The accused used to charge Rs 500 per driving licence and deliver it the very next day to customers.

Coaching Centre-42 win kabaddi championship
Chandigarh, December 8
Players of Coaching Centre, Sector 42, won the Chandigarh State Kabaddi Championship in both Men's and Women's categories. The championship was held at the Sports Complex, Sector 42.

Jagjit Singh wins athletics meet
Chandigarh, December 8
Athlete Jagjit Singh of DAV College, Sector 10, secured first place in the the 400mt event of the ongoing Panajb University Annual Athletic meet today. The meet is being held at the PU grounds. He won the race with a timing of 51.92 seconds while Gulsher Singh of SGGS College, Chandigarh, finished second with 52.05 seconds. Satnam Singh of SGGS Khalsa College, Mahilpur, attained third place after completing the event in 52.26 seconds.

Punjab post 277 in first innings

Punjab gained first innings lead against Haryana during the Vijay Merchant Trophy today. Resuming from their overnight score of 101 run Punjab team scored 277 runs in 99 overs to get a 34-run lead.
