4 more fraudsters land in police net
Used to dupe copper, brass and aluminium dealers in six states
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 8
The Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the UT Police has arrested four members of the gang that used to dupe copper, brass and aluminium dealers.
All accused, who are scrap dealers operating from Jalandhar and Jagadhri, were arrested on the information provided by the key accused, Gurpreet Singh, who was arrested on December 6.

Those arrested have been identified as Sunil Kumar (26) and Ravi Kumar (32), both brothers hailing from Uttar Pradesh and running their scrap business in Jalandhar. The other two, also scrap dealers in Jagadhri and Haryana, have been identified as Naresh Kumar (45) and Sanjay Sethi (24).

The key accused in the case used to surf Internet and identify dealers in Gujarat, Ratlam, Indore, and Raipur. After the dealers fell in his trap, he used to ask for consignments in trucks to be delivered in the outskirts of Chandigarh. He then used to dupe truck drivers either by giving them fake demand drafts or shifting the consignments to his own truck.

DSP (EOW) Anil Joshi said Gurpreet during the interrogation disclosed the names of his other gang members, who were helping him in the crime and had cheated traders of around six states.

“The accused revealed that the gang members never disclosed their addresses to each other and only used to contact on mobile phones,” the DSP said.

He added that a team was constituted to nab the other remaining four gang members, who acted as decoy customers.

A police team posing as steel and brass dealers contacted the accused, Sunil and Ravi, for selling 1,000 kg of copper and asked them to come to Chandigarh. The accused struck a deal of Rs 4 lakh with the policemen and fixed a hotel in Burail as the meeting point.

“As soon the accused came here, we arrested them and asked them to call the remaining two gang members to finalise the deal,” the DSP said.

A similar trap for scrap dealers from Jagadhri was laid, who also reached Chandigarh with Rs 6 lakh to purchase copper from the scrap dealers arrested earlier.

The police has recovered Rs 10 lakh cash, laptops, SIM cards, mobile phones and a car from their possession.
