PMO’s clean chit to Vadra-DLF Land Deals
Probe panel in a fix
Pradeep Sharma/TNS

Chandigarh, November 30
The “clean chit” given by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra in land deals with realty major DLF in Haryana has put the high-level committee probing the orders of whistleblower IAS officer Ashok Khemka into the land deals in a catch-22 situation.

With the PMO giving a “clean chit” to Vadra, it would now be difficult for the three-member inquiry committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) Krishna Mohan to give a report to the contrary, sources said here today.

The committee, which was scheduled to submit its report on November 18, had already been given a month’s extension by the Haryana Government as it had failed to prepare the report after expiry of the stipulated one-month period.

In an affidavit before the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court recently, the PMO claimed that the allegations regarding irregular land dealings between Vadra and DLF "appear to be false, based on hearsay and vexatious".

Even as the government functionaries put up a brave face claiming that a “fair and impartial” inquiry would be conducted by the three-member panel, Opposition BJP alleged that the PMO’s “clean chit” seemed to have stonewalled the inquiry report. “After the PMO’s ‘clean chit’, the inquiry by a government panel is merely eyewash. Nothing short of a judicial probe into the land deals between Vadra and DLF, in which the Haryana Government played an active part, can bring out the truth,” asserted Capt Abhimanyu, BJP national secretary.

In fact, this is not for the first time that Vadra had been given a clean chit by functionaries of the government. Late last month, the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of Gurgaon, Faridabad, Palwal and Mewat in NCR region, in their reports to the state government, had claimed that there was no undervaluation of properties sold or bought by Vadra or his companies.

In his order dated October 15, the then director general of land consolidation, Ashok Khemka, had set aside the mutation of 3.5 acre plot of land in Shikohpur (Manesar) that Vadra had sold to DLF for Rs 58 crore. It was cancelled on the ground that the assistant consolidation officer, who had sanctioned the change of title, was not competent to do so. And on October 12, Khemka had asked the four DCs to inspect all documents related to land deals by Vadra and his companies from 2005.

Hisar, November 30
A crowd agitated over the murder of Geetika, a student of Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology, who was axed to death by a fellow student inside the campus on Monday, today manhandled newly appointed Proctor MS Turan.

Turan was admitted to a local private nursing home. He has a fractured hand and other injuries. He had been appointed Proctor after his predecessor quit on Wednesday.

Geetika’s father, Lajpat Rai, along with relatives and friends came to the campus this morning from Faridabad. He was joined by Geetika’s maternal uncle, Manohar Lal Nangru. Prominent Punjabi leader Gautam Sardana and his supporters also gathered at the university gate.

After a brief meeting they decided to submit a memorandum to the university authorities regarding their demands. These included installing Geetika’s statueinside the campus, renaming the girls’ hostel after Geetika, adequate security for girl students and speedy trial of the murder case in a fast track court.

They sent a message to the authorities to come to the gate and accept the memorandum. However, there was no response from the authorities for a long time. Angered by the delay, the crowd moved inside the campus and reached the administrative offices.

No responsible official of the university came out to accept their memorandum even after the crowd raised slogans and staged a demonstration. After a short while the crowd forced its way inside the building despite the presence of a large police force.

The crowd manhandled a woman employee. As the Proctor came out, he was pushed around. He slipped and fell on the floor fracturing his hand.Acting Vice-Chancellor KS Khokhar somehow managed to take the injured Proctor out of the building from the back door.

As the Proctor was being taken to the hospital in the VC’s car, the crowd attacked them. However, Turan was saved by employees and shifted to a hospital.

A team of senior police officers, university officers and teachers managed to calm down the crowd after a round of talks. However, the talks broke down when Khokhar explained that he could only convey their demands to the Chancellor. He explained that he could not take a decision as he was the acting VC .

The crowd then demanded that the Deputy Commissioner be summoned. After the talks broke down, the crowd began a dharna outside the building.

Tribune News Service

Sirsa, November 30
Much to the relief of Sirsa residents and the district authorities, the meeting of Sikh organisations on Saturday’s clash involving followers of Dera Sacha Sauda and forces opposed to the dera went off peacefully today.

Though several hardliner Sikhs like Sant Baljit Singh Daduwal and Sukhwinder Singh Khalsa advocated a tough stand on the issue, the maturity exhibited by Jathedar Balwant Singh Nandgarh of Takht Damdama Sahib who appealed to the residents to maintain peace, helped save the situation.

Several other prominent Sikh leaders like Jagdish Singh Jhinda, president of the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Prakash Singh Sahuwala, Baba Pritam Singh and others were at the meeting held in Gurdwara Shri Dashm Patshahi here.

Nandgarh demanded that the police should complete investigations in the case registered against followers of the dera for the November 24 violence at the earliest and arrest all the accused. He added that the issue would be taken to the five high priests in case the local people felt they had not been provided justice by the authorities.

While the meeting was in progress at the gurdwara, a youth, allegedly carrying out a reconnaissance on behalf of the dera, was caught by some Sikh youths, thrashed and handed over to the police.

Meanwhile, the authorities today extended the closure of schools, colleges and all other educational institutions for two more days. They will now reopen on December 3.

Sources said Gurupal Singh and his wrestler friends were returning from Sonepat around 9 pm on Wednesday when their car was stopped near Gulia petrol pump by five unidentified persons. One of the persons was holding a carbine and another was having a pistol.

Manesar industrialists observe bandh
Tribune News Service

Manesar, November 30
The Manesar Industries Welfare Association (MIWA), in association with the Confederation of Haryana Industries Associations (CHIA), today observed a bandh in protest against the lack of basic facilities, poor infrastructure, state government and the HSIIDC’s highhandedness and the massive enhancement levied on the allottees.

The protesters, including industrial captains from the Gurgaon-Manesar belt and other parts of the state as well as industrial workers, also took out a rally and staged a demonstration to register their protest at IMT Manesar.

It may be pertinent to mention here that small and medium industrialists have been protesting against the lack of facilities and authorities highhandedness for long.

However, instead of fulfilling their demands, the authorities “concerned” imposed a massive enhancement of more than Rs 5,000 crore on the industrial units located in the IMT Manesar.

The MIWA has been spearheading the movement to improve the infrastructure and fight the imposition of the massive enhancement, which, it maintains, would destroy the small and medium industrial enterprises.

Amina Sherwani of MIWA maintained that if the state government did not revoke its decision to levy the massive and unreasonable enhancement, they would take the legal recourse against the move.

LPG geyser leak kills mother, daughter
Tribune News Service

Fatehabad, November 30
An LPG geyser today claimed the lives of a woman and her 13-year-old daughter at Jakhal town in Fatehabad district. Anju Singla, wife of industrialist and brick kiln owner Ratan Lal Singla, had taken her daughter Ananya to the bathroom for bathing in the morning when gas emitted from the geyser silenced both of them.

The family members got suspicious when the two did not come out of the bathroom for over an hour.

When they did not get any response on knocking at the door, the family members broke open the door and found the duo lying on the floor.

They were rushed to a local hospital, but doctors could not save them.

Experts maintain that carbon monoxide, a toxic gas, is emitted during combustion in these geysers.

"The toxic gas with no colour or odour is emitted during combustion in the LPG-fuelled geyser, and is a silent killer. Within minutes of being exposed to the gas, the victims are poisoned and rendered unconscious," experts said.

The gas geyser has emerged as a cost-effective method for heating water at homes and offices over the past two years.

Retailers label it as 70 per cent cheaper than electric-powered water heaters.
