Kuldip Nayar honoured with Chhatarpati Samman
Sirsa, November 21 Speaking to mediapersons, Nayar said he was not sure whether Kasab’s hanging would have any effect on the fate of Indians like Sarabjit Singh facing gallows in Pakistani jails. Nayar decried the role of Mumbai police in arresting two young girls for their comments on social website ‘Facebook’ and said the act of the police was blatant violation of freedom of speech. Earlier, addressing a gathering during Chhatarpati Smriti Samaroh, a function organised to mark the 11th death anniversary of slain scribe Ram Chander Chhatarpati, Nayar said, “Whenever anti-people forces have raised their heads in this country, those, who believe in some principles in public life have always come forward to confront such forces.” Chhatarpati, editor and owner of evening daily “Poora Sach” had fallen to the bullets of assassins on this day and among those, who are facing a trial for his murder is Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, head of Dera Sacha Sauda. In his brief speech, Nayar said several efforts had been made in the country to suppress freedom of Press, but people like Chhatarpati had always fought for the freedom of expression. Samvad, an NGO working for public causes, honoured Nayar with ‘Chhatarpati Samman’ on the occasion. Jagmohan Singh, president of the Jambhori Adhikar Sabha and kin of martyr Bhagat Singh, also expressed his views. Anshul Chhatarpati, son of the slain scribe, said he would always tread the footsteps of his father without fear. The Haryana Union of Journalist honoured Fatehabad journalist RK Sethi with Chhatarpati Patrakarita Award on the occasion. |

All 334 villages of Sirsa get solar lights
Sirsa, November 21 J Ganesan, Deputy Commissioner of Sirsa, said under the Jawaharlal Nehru Solar Mission, more than 5,000 solar lights had been installed in all 334 villages of the district. He said subsidy had also been provided on these solar lights under the mission. The cost of one such light was Rs 19,000 and a subsidy of Rs 5,700 was given on it. Ganesan said in response to the demand of residents of big villages, more that 20 solar lights each had been installed in such villages. Under the Backward Region Grant Fund Scheme, Rs 2 crore had been spent to install the solar lights. During the current financial year, the department had provided 230 home lighting cookers, 100 home lighting systems, 50 box-type cookers and 20 dish-type solar cookers in district Sirsa, he added. |
Job quota sought for ITI passouts in industries
Jind, November 21 Claiming that there was no job guarantee for the passouts of the ITIs in the state, the association of the instructors has demanded 80 per cent reservation in the newly established industries in the state for those who pass out from the ITIs in the state. The association has also demanded regularisation of the services of around 2,000 instructors employed on contract since 2006. In a statement here today, a spokesperson of the Haryana ITI Contractual Instructors Welfare Association said the claim of the Education Minister of Haryana that the sharp rise in the number of the ITIs in the state in the past few years would result in an employment boom for the youths completing their courses could be wrong as the authorities concerned were still to provide a job guarantee to the ITI passouts. He said the target of improving the employment rate could not be achieved till the government provided reservation to such students in industries in the state. He said their counterparts in other places, including Chandigarh and Delhi, were getting 72 per cent DA in addition to the monthly wages, he said several meetings held with the authorities had gone in vain, resulting in resentment among the teachers. |
2,000 get hearing aids in Hisar LS constituency
Hisar, November 22 The announcement was made by the founder of the foundation, Bill Austin, at a function organised here today to distribute hearing aids to persons with hearing impairment. Austin presented the foundation seal to Bishnoi and his wife Renuka Bishnoi, MLA from the Adampur constituency. Austin presented hearing aids to 2,000 persons with impaired hearing belonging to the Hisar Lok Sabha constituency free of cost. Austin said his mission in life was to enable every hearing impaired person in the world to hear properly. He was making an effort to do this by presenting state-of-the-art hearing aids to such people. He said Kuldeep Bishnoi had travelled to the USA to convince him to visit Haryana and organise a function to distribute hearing aids. He said social welfare should also be a part of a public representative’s agenda. Describing Austin as a large-hearted person with a passion for philanthropy, Bishnoi thanked Austin for visiting Haryana and distributing the hearing aids. He said Austin’s philosophy of equality extended to his business also as all his employees were shareholders rather than employees with specific designations. Thanking Haryana Janhit Congress workers for conducting a survey to identify the beneficiaries from every village and town of the Hisar Lok Sabha constituency ,he said a state-level camp would be organised shortly to distribute hearing aids. Austin has been distributing hearing aids since 1974. He founded the Starkey Hearing Foundation in 1984 to take his mission global. |

JBT students hold protest
against 180-day internship
Sonepat, November 21 Led by Kunal Gahlaut, state general secretary of the INSO, students’ wing of the INLD, the protesters handed over a memorandum, addressed to the Chief Minister, of their demand to the SDM, Sonepat. In the memorandum, they demanded immediate withdrawal of the orders of the internship in the interest of the career of the students. It was alleged that in the prospectus provided at the time of admission, there was no mention of this internship. Hence, it was illegal and discriminatory. Kunal pointed out that in the form of 20,000 internship trainees, the government would get JBT teachers free of cost and it would also deprive the trained JBT teachers from the regular job opportunities. “It is a calculated move of the government to meet shortage of the JBT teachers by the JBT trainees through internship,” he added. |
Promote cycling in cities to decongest roads: Experts
Gurgaon, November 21 These conclusions were reached at a workshop on “Finding Traffic Solutions for Gurgaon”, organised by Gurgaon Renewal Mission and Gurgaon First here today. Various stakeholders, including representatives of government bodies, traffic managers, road-building and transport sector companies, RWAs, NGOs and academic institutions, participated in the brainstorming session to churn out productive solutions to combat the traffic chaos in the city. The participants deliberated upon finding integrated and sustainable approaches to manage traffic and transportation problems of the city. The existing traffic issues and possible technological solutions were discussed. Local HUDA Administrator Dr Praveen Kumar asserted that there was an urgent need for sustainable, integrated solutions to the transport and traffic problems of Gurgaon. “HUDA is looking for a strategic development plan and its proper implementation to reduce the crisis in the city,” he said. Dr Kulwant Singh, regional advisor, UN-Habitat, opined that transport was not just about supplying infrastructure. “It is more about the pedestrians and the problems faced by them. However, it is sad that they are neither consulted nor kept under consideration before constructing roads,” he maintained. Municipal Councillor Nisha Singh pointed out that the multiplicity of authority led to confusion and chaos in road building, traffic regulation and transport management. She sought more powers for the elected representatives as they were in direct contact with the local residents. Lt-Gen Rajender Singh, CEO, DLF Foundation, said: “Traffic has been identified as one of the most serious issues facing Gurgaon. The quality of traffic infrastructure in the city needs to be improved considerably in order to cope with current traffic volumes and in view of address the future growth of Gurgaon.” |

BJP, HJC protest UPA’s policies
Sonepat, November 21 Addressing the protesters, Rao said the dharna was organised to make people aware about the rampant corruption in the form of 2G spectrum, coal mining, rising prices and foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail sector. He alleged that the UPA Government was out to invite another East India Company through FDI and it was not in the interests of the country. The BJP would oppose this move at every level, he announced. Jhajjar: BJP-HJC activists on Wednesday held a demonstration across the city against the UPA government for not taking adequate steps to control corruption and inflation, besides allowing FDI in the retail sector. The protesters also shouted slogans against the union government and termed it as the ‘most corrupt’ government since Independence as a record number of scams had surfaced during the UPA regime. Later, the protesters took out a protest march across the city and called upon the people to oppose the Congress in the next elections. |

Mathematics is queen of sciences: Governor
Rohtak, November 21 This four-day meeting of subject experts is being organised by the Department of Mathematics of MDU in collaboration with the Indian Society for History of Mathematics to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of noted mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Pahadia said the development of advanced mathematics had felicitated the growth of computers, information technology (IT) and allied sciences. Lauding the contribution of ancient Indian mathematicians as extraordinary, he termed mathematics as a tool for analysis and problem solving in sciences as well as life. He released a commemorative souvenir and abstract book on the occasion. The president of the Indian Society for History of Mathematics, Prof. S.G. Dani (IIT, Mumbai) said awareness of history at individual as well as societal levels was necessary for progress. He said this conference would help promote awareness about the subject in society. The MDU Vice-Chancellor said mathematics is the mother of all sciences and highlighted the significance of computational mathematics, especially in the field of space exploration. He also shed light on the contribution of India in mathematical sciences in the realm of the concept of zero and decimal system. Prof Dinesh Singh, VC of the University of Delhi, Prof H.P. Muslims piqued as no action taken on mosque razing
Fatehabad, November 21 The community members have threatened exodus from village in case the police continued its attitude. It is a historical mosque and is mentioned in ‘The Gazette of India’ dated October 17, 1970. It was allegedly vandalised by some local residents in Bhirdana earlier this month. A Wakf Board trustee, Mohammad Usman Khan, had lodged a complaint with the police a day after the incident, but the police has so far not taken any action. Babu Khan, president of the Muslim Human Welfare Society, alleged that the members of his community living in the village were feeling terrified and planning to camp outside the mini secretariat after exodus from the village. He alleged that the police instead of booking those responsible for the act was pressuring members of the Muslim community to give their thumb impressions on some papers to save politically influential persons. The police had earlier denied that there was any controversy within the village on this issue. |
Bulk supply consumer told to pay up Rs 5.55 cr
Chandigarh, November 21 The Director Vigilance, Haryana Power Utilities, said here today that this was one of the major cases in which the Vigilance Department was instrumental in getting such a high penalty imposed . In this case, the common load of the consumer was found to be 551.844 KW against the sanctioned load of 418.5 KW, which was more than 15% of the sanctioned load. The load being used by the market in the premises was about 225 KW. Secondly, the amount was being charged as per domestic tariff instead of non-domestic tariff for the past over one year. |

Kurukshetra NIT student ends life
Kurukshetra, November 21 His friend Surender had gone to see Jitender in the hostel after he did not get any response to his calls. Surender informed the warden when Jitender did not open the room. When the room was opened, he was found hanging by the ceiling fan. The body was sent to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem. Though no suicide note was found, his friends said that he was perturbed over his poor performance in the examination. The parents of the deceased were informed by the authorities. |

Patient jumps from hospital building, stable
Faridabad, November 21 Her condition is said to be stable. She is an acute psychiatric case and was admitted in the ‘Unknown Ward’ of the hospital located on the second floor of the building. An insider in the hospital, on a condition of anonymity, said the patient had been showing signs of severe suicidal tendencies for the past three days. She would get violent and had made attempts to break free from the ward. She frequently declared her intent to commit suicide. The identity of the patient is unknown. Hospital staff say she had been brought to the institute by a non-government organisation. On account of the severity of her ailment, she had been transferred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where she was kept for a fortnight. She was shifted back to BK Hospital last week. |
Girl, lover held for killing mother
Sonepat, November 21 The accused buried the body in a drain on the Gohana-Julana road and spread information that Sheila had gone on a pilgrimage. The accused poured salt on the body so that that it was destroyed at the earliest. They were today arrested by the police after a case of her missing was registered on the complaint of the victim’s brother Surender of Kohand village in Karnal district. After their interrogation, the police recovered Sheila’s body from the drain and it was sent to the PGIMS, Rohtak, for a post-mortem. During interrogation, the accused said that Sheila was against Sweta’s proposal to marry Surender and so they conspired to eliminate her on October 25.— OC |
Police insensitivity comes to the fore
Fatehabad, November 21 A police party came to the house with woman constables and took away the woman and the schoolgirl in her uniform to the police station only to find later that it was an innocuous case of a minor girl sitting in her neighbour’s house and not a case of prostitution. Ratia SHO Subhash Chander said the police had received a tip-off that a woman had brought a minor girl for prostitution. However, the information was found to be wrong and all those taken into custody were let off. |
