BJP chief poll set aside
Jalandhar, December 5 A copy of the order was passed by Vinod Sharma, election in charge, BJP Punjab, wherein he mentioned, “With reference to election of district president held on November 23, the appeal filed by SD Chugh is allowed and the order for setting aside election passed. Earlier president Subhash Sood will continue to be president till election of new BJP district president.” Chugh had filed a complaint after the party general secretary Manjit Singh Rai had levelled charges of forging signatures of Joginder Verma, a circle president, as proposer in his nomination papers. Rai was made in charge of elections of district president in Jalandhar. It was on these grounds that papers of Chugh, who was considered the top rival for the post, were declared invalid. Chugh had held a press conference the same evening, where Verma had said that it were his own signatures done in Hindi. Both had claimed that they should have been taken into confidence and questioned about the same before divulging anything to media. A former district president and a former councillor, Chugh had filed an appeal two days later. While the appointment of Ravi was being hailed by Manoranjan Kalia, MLA Jalandhar Central, Chugh was being supported by the other side of the BJP camp led by MLA Jalandhar North KD Bhandari. Chugh had been claiming that he was being time and again made to cut a sorry figure in the party with certain factions trying to oust him. “I was a mayoral candidate in the last term, but Rakesh Rathour had been brought on the post. When I was gearing up to fight again this year, my ward was declared reserved for woman. To belittle me, the ticket of Joginder Kaur whom I was supporting from my ward was also withdrawn at the last moment,” he had been saying. His confidence, however, seemed to have returned today. Ravi, on the other hand, too, has been a loser for the third time. He has twice been a mayoral candidate, but remained unsuccessful. Now the post which he had been assigned too has been withdrawn. Reacting to the order, Ravi Mahendru claimed that the Punjab election in charge was to decide on the appeal within five days, that is November 30, as per the BJP constitution. "Passing the decision after the given time-frame makes it unconstitutional. My view has not been taken. So the decision is also one-sided," said Ravi. |
'Abducted' girl rescued from Nawanshahr
Jalandhar, December 5 The family members raised a hue and cry after she did not turn up till late evening following which her father Jeet lodged a complaint at the police station. Jeet, a resident of Sarpura village, had also apprehended the involvement of a local youth Akshay, who reportedly was seen with the girl by certain residents of the area, in the abduction case. The issue was also brought to the notice of Anita Sandhu of the Istri Jagriti Manch and Tarsem Peter, president of the Pendu Mazoor Union, Punjab. Sources revealed that Jeet's family members including Balwinder Kaur, an aunt, accompanied the police to Akshya's house and they subsequently headed to the industrial unit - SEL Manufacturing Company limited - where the suspect had allegedly managed to hide the girl in connivance with certain employees of the industry. ASI, Jaswant Singh, his team and the girl's relatives conducted a surprise visit at the premises of the thread-manufacturing unit and found the girl in a room of Girls Hostel being looked after by Kashmir Kaur, a factory labourer officer, claimed Jeet. Peter alleged that the girl was illegally kept in the hostel by the labourer officers of the factory (Kashmir Kaur and Harminder Singh) as they were in Akshya's link. After rescuing the girl, who was in a state of shock, the police neither got the girl medically examined nor registered any case against the boy and the employees of the industrial unit. The policemen instead kept on pressuring the family to remain quite or face the music, Peter alleged. The girl's health worsened, as she reached home and was then admitted to Nakodar Civil Hospital on Tuesday. She was referred to Jalandhar Civil Hospital this morning after her health deteriorated, claimed Jeet, the victim's father. Interestingly, the police recorded the statements of Jeeta, his wife and other family members at the local Civil Hospital after the members of the Istri Jagriti Manch and the Pendu Mazdoor Union approached Urinder Singh Hayer, the district police chief. ASI Jaswinder Singh claimed that a case under Sections 363, 366 of the IPC would be registered against the accused and the sections would be added after the girl (not fit) victim gets her statement recorded. Meanwhile, Deepak Chauhan, vice- president (HR) of SEL Manufacturing Company, claimed that the girl had been to the industry for a job and was allowed entry on the verification of some employee of the factory. "We came to know about the episode only after the police, accompanied by her family members, reached the industry premises," he claimed. |

Jalandhar, December 5 MC officials said they were following court orders on a contempt plea filed by the Greenwood Society, which had claimed that the road leading to their society was 27 feet wide in records instead of 24 feet as was on the ground. The court had asked the administration to check records which further asked the patwari and kanungo to get the demarcation done. The records showed the road width as 27 feet. Ever since nearly 23 properties had come up along the land, half of them non-constructed with only boundary walls raised. The MC team, led by Municipal Town Planner Tejpreet Singh, armed with 50 policemen and senior police officials and staff from the revenue department took the action. After the team met with severe opposition, nearly eight constructed houses and seven shops which were lying locked were spared with the warning to withdraw the boundary wall 3 feet backwards within three days. The owner of one property, Rattandeep Singh, cried foul, as he said that he had the registry of his complete property. “Did the revenue officers not realise their mistake then?” he asked. Commissioner Viney Bublani said the action would be followed again on Monday, for there was a hearing of contempt on December 13. |
Few auspicious days for nuptials next year, say astrologers
Jalandhar, December 5 There are reports that many families which had marriages slated next year have preferred to get these solemnised within this month. Almost all marriage palaces and hotels in the city are booked for functions all days of the week since the beginning of this month for the same reason. Yog Raj Shastri, a city-based astrologer, assigns the reason, “It is because of the fact that there are very few auspicious days next year and most of these fall in summers. Since people generally prefer winter months, there are very few lucky days in these months.” Vinay Shastri, another astrologer, claimed that "shubh mahurats" this year were only till December 9 and several families have fixed marriages prior to that. “There are three favourite months for marriages - December, January and February. After December 9, the good time for marriage is between January 17 and February 9. After that, there is a huge gap till April 29. After that people generally avoid fixing marriages, with summers setting in.” Ranbir Tut, president of the Jalandhar Marriage Palace Association, agreed that bookings were good this month. “In contrast, there are just eight bookings with us in January 2013 whereas we usually have more than 20 marriages lined up.” |
