Residents grope in the dark
Jalandhar, December 4 Since the centres for making cards keep changing after a few months to new locations, it has become all the more cumbersome for the residents to keep a track of the same. The residents are seen running around the offices of the food and civil supplies or DC office to know the site of the new centres. Ever since the government announced that Aadhar Card would be taken as the basis for disbursing any social welfare grant, residents are showing more concern over the issue. The District Food and Civil Supplies Officer TS Chopra has his own point of view, “Residents of all those pockets where Aadhar cards are being made are aware of the cards being made. The centres are already facing much rush. If we publicise about the centres, the rush will become unmanageable.” Sources in the department revealed that even as the company was to install 146 machines in the district, only 60 had been put up which was resulting in more pressure on the staff. On this issue, the DFSC said the contract for the purpose was not direct with the department and, hence, he could not do much about it. There have also been complaints from some elderly persons that their cards were not being made, as the machine was not able to upload the data related to their fingerprints. Residents of Dada Nagar, Jaswant Singh (84) and his wife Iqbal Kaur (81) said on November 8, they had gone to a centre set up at Indira Park to get their cards made, but the system did not accept their fingerprints, owing to which their data could not be uploaded. “We were asked to keep our finger tips greased well and come after two days. When we went again, again the same thing happened with us. We have given our representation to the administration also, but there has been no response so far,” said Jaswant Singh. Chopra said he had come to know about the problem, which is a unique one. “I have been told that there was less than 20 per cent clarity in their finger tips owing to which the system was not accepting it. We are following up the matter and trying to sort it out,” he said. Online booking Growing concern |
MC fails to popularise night shelters for the destitute
Jalandhar, December 4 However, the MC has failed to popularise these shelters. A few sign boards regarding night shelters which had been earlier put up are nowhere to be seen now. No information regarding the same has been publicised outside the bus stand, railway station or other entry points in the city. It is for this reason that many shelterless people are seen lying outside on the roads in the night braving the harsh cold. Executive Engineer Chaman Lal, nodal officer for the purpose, said that the provision of beddings and blankets had been made in seven shelters. He said while the shelters underneath Domoria ROB and Khalsa College ROB were daily getting some poor people owing to their proximity to railway station and bus stand, respectively, the rest were remaining unutilised so far. He said staff had been appointed on contract to keep a record of visitors to the shelters and provide beddings. One night shelter came up underneath Domoria ROB last year, another hall-type shelter has been constructed adjacent to the same building. A shelter came up under Lyallpur Khalsa College ROB last year, but winters were already over thereafter. Ever since, the MC has got constructed five shelters, one in Garha, another near Garha disposal close to Joti Nagar, near Basti Sheikh zonal office, near cremation ground of Basti Peet Daad and adjoining Madan Flour Mill. Jalandhar, December 4 Later, they dumped the injured man along a drain and escaped from the scene, considering him to be dead. A critically injured Guddu was later noticed by certain passersby in a drain along the 120-foot road, and they informed the ambulance (108). The victim was then rushed to the local Civil Hospital. The incident occurred last night after Sallu, Fauju, and Pradeep, accompanying Guddu, reached Jalandhar from Ludhiana by train and later went to a rehri along the Ladowali road in front of a newspaper office. The station house officer, Basti Bawa Khel police station, Makhan Singh, revealed that in his statement, Guddu, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, claimed to be working with a tea-manufacturing unit at Ludhiana, along with the assailants. After reaching near the drain, the three first assaulted and stabbed him and even tried to slit his throat with a sharp-edged weapon, the SHO added. He said thinking Guddu to be dead, the trio fled from the scene. Sallu was apprehending that Guddu had illicit relations with his wife, the SHO said.
