Jalandhar, November 24
On the third day of the Abolition of Child Labour Week being held in the city, officials of the city rescued and released four children employed as child labourers in various establishments in the district. It was observed that as the days of the Labour Week advance, the gap between the number of raids conducted and child labourers rescued is only increasing.

Even as three Labour Department teams conducted as many as 134 raids today, only four children were rescued.

Assistant Labour Commissioner Sukhjinder Singh said while two of these children were rescued pursuing hazardous occupations, the other two were pursuing non-hazardous occupations.

While two of the children were rescued from Phillaur, the other two were rescued from Jalandhar.

Just like the past two days, none of the children rescued were bonded labourers.

Even as on the third day of the raids and after one complaint made by an NGO on the issue, the Assistant Labour Commissioner today again said no FIRs had been registered against any offenders.

“FIRs are only lodged if the children are bonded labourers. The in charge of the Human Trafficking Wing of the police also accompanied one of our teams. But since none of the children were found to be bonded labourers, no FIRs were registered,” he said.

Notably, no FIRs have so far been registered against the owners of the 16 child labourers rescued in the drives conducted on day 1 and day 2 of the week, either.

On day one, as many as 8 children were found pursuing hazardous occupations and today, two.

As per the Child Labour Act (1986), the employment of a child below the age of 14 years in a hazardous occupation by a person is a punishable offence. Sukhjinder Singh, however, made no mention of this.

20 children rescued so far

  • On the first day of the drive, the Labour Department conducted 134 raids across the district and rescued nine children.
  • On Day 2, seven children were rescued by the labour department during raids
  • Day 3 sees four children being rescued.

No FIRs

  • Even as on the third day of the raids and after one complaint made by an NGO on the issue, the Assistant Labour Commissioner today again said no FIRs had been registered against any offenders

The police, acting on Sewa Singh’s information, arrested two of the alleged kidnappers, identified as Malkit Singh of Bhakhri village and Baldev Singh of Dhadey village.

Their third accomplice was absconding.

Inspector Barjinder Singh said the incident occurred on Friday at 8.30 pm. The farmer was heading home on his bike when a car rammed on to his bike from the rear side near Dhiwan railway crossing. As Sewa Singh fell down, three persons alighted from the car and attempted to bundle him inside the vehicle.

The Inspector claimed that the farmer put up stiff resistance which made the kidnappers flee. Sewa Singh, who sustained minor injuries in the incident, complained to the police about the incident.

The police party was dispatched to nab the criminals, the Inspector said. Two accused were later nabbed from the Chohnka village, while another managed to flee.

During investigation, the accused told the police that they would have kidnapped the farmer for ransom, but they could not succeed in their attempt. Police sources said accused had no weapon to orchestrate the crime.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan visits city to promote his upcoming film ‘Talaash’

Jalandhar, November 24
Aamir Khan changed the rules about what was conventionally considered commercially viable in Bollywood. In an industry thriving on formula and masala, he brought tales of real people (read: Tare Zameen Par, Peepli Live) into the commercial mainstream like never before, turning them into hits.

With his popular TV show Satyamev Jayate, he only reiterated his intention to use his star power as a medium to voice concerns hounding the common man, again pulling off something none of his contemporaries had even thought of.

So when the perfectionist Aamir Khan treaded into the city tonight, on a promotional visit for his upcoming suspense venture Talaash, it was an occasion for the crowds to cheer.

Responding to a packed house of press people toppling over each other, Aamir laid to rest the queries Jalandhar had about things ranging from his films and political (read: non-political) inclinations, to his moustaches.

Accompanied by director Reema Kagti and co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani, Aamir started off by responding to queries about his political ambitions.

"I do not support or campaign for any political party or person. But I have a stance against corruption. I favour concepts and thoughts, not parties," he said when asked whether he had ever thought of contesting elections.

He came up with quite a similar reply when asked whether he favoured Anna or Kejriwal.

Talking about the recent Facebook controversy wherein two girls were arrested for criticising the state 'bandh' following Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's demise,  the actor said, "I believe it is a very unfortunate incident. I recently heard that strict action will be taken against the policemen concerned."

"The incident is condemnable, but certainly it isn't a recent phenomenon and such incidents have taken place in the past too. I also, however, believe that Indian democracy has been getting very vibrant in the past few years," Aamir added.

Responding to queries whether rival Shah Rukh Khan's recent visit to Jalandhar had anything to do with his choice of Jalandhar to promote his film, Aamir chuckled, "I didn't even know Shah Rukh had come."

"Jalandhar is an important city of the northern region. It's a good city. That's why I came," he added.

Notably, Aamir's acquaintance to the city also goes back to two different episodes of his show Satyamev Jayate wherein the success stories of the Jalandhar-based NGO Unique Home and Passport Officer Parneet Singh's special efforts for wronged wives were featured.

When asked whether he had ever been scared of taking on big wigs like Narendra Modi (on the raising of the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam) and others during Staymev Jayate, he said, "Dar to lagta hai, main bhi insaan hun (I also feel frightened as I am human being). But I believe what is right should be done."

He confirmed that the inspiration for Talaash has partly been sought from a real incident which Zoya (director: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara fame) had been associated with. Talking about the film he said, "While the film is a suspense drama, it's also an emotional take on personal relationships. All of us are closest to a particular person and the film intensely explores this aspect of life."

Aamir confirmed that research is on for Satyamev Jayate Season 2 and it will be coming to the TV screens of eager fans soon.

On politics

I do not support or campaign for any political party or person. But I have a stance against corruption. I favour concepts and thoughts, not parties.

On Shah Rukh’s visit

I didn't even know Shah Rukh had come. Jalandhar is an important city of the northern region. It's a good city. That's why I came.

CII launches another cluster to help industry
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 24
With the objective of helping the Punjab Industry amidst global competition, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) formally launched its 15th cluster in Punjab and 229th cluster in the country on Saturday.

The CII-Cluster for Competitiveness programme is aimed at strengthening Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and component suppliers to meet the requirements of global competitiveness.

The cluster programme commenced in 1998 with 10 vendor companies of Maruti Udyog Limited and since then more and more companies have looked at the cluster companies as 'role models'. Approximately 2,192 SMEs have either enhanced or are enhancing their competitiveness through 229 clusters.

This cluster is launched with six companies committed to move forward and to achieve excellence in manufacturing. Companies like Guru Nanak Enterprises, JMP Industries, Sharp Chucks Ltd, HB Industries, Kapsons Industries are part of this cluster.

At the outset of the programme, Kamna Raj Aggarwalla, past chairperson, CII Punjab State Council, said, "In today's competitive world it is utmost important that we make optimum utilisation of limited resources to reduce the cost of production which in turns will increase profits. The CII cluster approach is a step in this direction."

She said 14 clusters for competitiveness had already been formed in Punjab with a net saving of Rs 45 crore. Around 50 companies in Punjab have been benefited by the cluster approach, she added.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Sunil Jyoti said, "It is a great initiative taken by the CII to enable Jalandhar industry become more competitive in the international arena." He hoped that other industries from the region would also join in this endeavor to become more competitive and world class organisations. Balram Kapoor, Chairman, CII Jalandhar Zonal Council, said, "Lean and competitive organisations especially in the small and medium sector are going to face stiff competition because of the present global interface of the Indian economy."

Two firms told to pay Rs 2,000 for a stale Rs 25 chocolate

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, November 24
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Lamma Pind-based Reliance Fresh and Secunderabad-based Agro Food Tech to pay Rs 2,000 to a city-based resident for selling a stale chocolate.

In her complaint filed in June this year, 68-year-old Raj Kumari, a resident of Karol Bagh colony, said she had been a regular customer as the store, it being close to her house. She said on May 4, she purchased some items including one Snack Break Chocolate. The total billed amount was Rs 193.87.

She said she has a four-year-old granddaughter Anushka Singh for whom she had bought the chocolate. She said when she opened the pack, she realised that the product had fungus all over it, though its expiry date was November 2. She said she immediately reported the matter with the manager of the store and requested for its replacement, who refused it. She demanded refund of the price of chocolate of Rs 25.

Upon notice, the opposite parties appeared and filed their separate written replies. The manager of Reliance Fresh said the store was selling only fresh fruits, vegetables and pre-packed consumer goods. He said that it procured commodities from various suppliers for retail sale of the same through their retail outlets. He said from the bill, there was no material on record to establish that the product in question had been purchased by the complainant from his outlet.

“It is submitted that the bar code on the product is product specific and not unit specific and all the units of the same product will have the same bar code as it is affixed by the manufacturer. It would not be possible to ascertain from the bill as to whether the product has been purchased by the complainant from his store,” the manager said.

The Agro Tech company owners pleaded that the packing of Snack Break Chocolate Pudding is done under the trade name of Agro Tech Foods Limited, it being an affiliate of Con Agra Foods Inc from where the product is imported. They denied said Snack Break Chocolate pudding had fungus on it. The said product is being manufactured by Con Agra Foods Inc which is renowned international foods company having the most modern and hygienic plants.

The forum said the complainant had produced the original Snack Break Chocolate and duly packed. Fungus is visible to the naked eye and as such, testing of the product from any laboratory was not required. There is no reliable evidence on record to show that the store owner stored the product at an appropriate temperature. The contention of Agro Tech that the product might have developed fungus due to non-storage of the same at an appropriate temperature appears to be most probable.
