Aunt arrested for NRI’s murder
Jalandhar, November 23 On January 19, 2012, England-based NRI Onkar Singh, a native of Kot Kalan village, died under mysterious circumstances at his residence in the village. Surprisingly, the victim was to catch his flight for the UK from Delhi. On September 16, eight months after the murder, the police had registered a murder case. The accused has been identified as Gurdev Kaur. Sources said the police has also detained two of her accomplices for investigation, but their role in the murder had not been established yet. One of the detained persons was a local property dealer. As mystery shrouded the NRI’s death, the police had then initiated the inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. Even in the autopsy report, the police had not found any internal injuries which could establish that the NRI was murdered. It was only after the police sent viscera for an examination at Kharar laboratory, the appearance of chloro compound (poisonous substance) in the report raised doubt of a foul play behind the death. Then after eight months, the police registered a murder case against the unknown persons.Meanwhile, the viscera report was discussed with the Police Commissioner, who asked Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Sukhdev Singh to conduct an inquiry. The SP (Traffic) also suspected a foul play in the death and submitted his inquiry report with the suggestion of registering a murder case. Gurvinder, The wife of the deceased later also returned to India and asked the police to conduct a thorough investigation, sources said. Deceased’s wife had also suspected the role of behind the murder and asked the police to investigate her role. Onkar had stayed in the village for just 10 days. On January 19, 2012, he was to leave for the Delhi airport from his village to board a flight to the UK, but his health suddenly deteriorated and later he had to cancel his flight. On the same day, he breathed his last at his residence. Three months later, chloro compound was found in a viscera report. The report stunned the NRI’s family members, who later asked the police to conduct a thorough investigation. On September 16, the police registered a murder case against unknown persons. PUDA project caught in planning stage
Jalandhar, November 20 While the PUDA officials had finalised a plan and had even floated and approved tenders for the construction work, the project had been dumped in around July this year with the higher authorities calling for re-plan of the site. Ever since, there has been no work on it. The demolition work at the old Central Jail building had then been going on at a good pace when the decision came. In fact, two commercial blocks at the 18.97 acres of site had been proposed in the earlier plan submitted to the Chief Administrator, PUDA, Mohali. It had also been proposed that the site will be open from all sides and there will be multi-tier parking which will not only cater to the walk-in in the market but also surrounding areas. The old jail here had been shifted to Kapurthala about two years back. The project to widen the road starting from the Football Chowk side to the premises in order to have a better approach had also been started by the MC then by acquiring land from residents. Somnath, SE, PUDA, said the fresh plan was still awaited. “All those contractors who had started work had been asked to stop work for the time being. We will think over on the issue once we get a copy of the new plan”. |
BJP does a balancing act
Jalandhar, November 23 The local chapter of the BJP has primarily two groups, one led by Bhandari and the second one by Kalia. Both have been on collision course ever since the Mayoral elections started. While Bhandari stole the limelight at that time, it was Kalia who gained a mileage this time. The faction supporting minister Bhagat Chunni Lal has, however, maintained silence on the matter. Since Bhandari, Sunil Jyoti and Ravi Mahendru represent the same constituency of Jalandhar North, the BJP has recently witnessed a major tussle over the appointment of three circle presidents in the area between Bhandari and Mahendru groups. A decision on the matter was kept pending by the election in charge and now the state BJP is to appoint circle presidents in this constituency. Unlike his predecessor, Ravi will hold the charge for tenure of three years. Ravi Mahendru had been the district president earlier from 2007-10. Ever since, he had been on the post of state secretary. Ravi is also a two-time councillor and his name has been proposed twice for Mayor’s post by Kalia. Sign controversy
A new controversy ensued today as election in charge and state BJP general secretary Manjit Singh Rai today alleged that he had found forged signatures of president of circle number 11 Jagmohan Verma as a proposer on a claim form for the post submitted by ex-councillor and ex-president Shiv Dyal Chugh yesterday. Rai said he got skeptical as he found that the signature started with letter ‘G’ instead ‘J’. He said then he checked up for circle president’s signatures on his form filled during his recent election, which varied altogether. He said he would lodge a complaint in this regard with the disciplinary committee of the party demanding action against Chugh. Chugh had been a claimant for the Mayor’s post last year and this time his ward had been reserved for woman. He was also the toughest candidate against Mahendru this time, both having remained the district president in the past. Rai said candidates for the post other than Mahendru had committed mistakes in filling up forms or had submitted them incomplete, owing to which he had been chosen unopposed. Chugh, however, denied having fabricated any signatures. He held a press conference in the evening where circle president Jagmohan Verma sided with him saying that they should have been asked for an explanation before releasing any information of the sort to the media. Verma said he was using his signatures in Hindi and English both. “While I signed in English during my elections, I used my Hindi signatures for Chugh’s form. The first letter in Hindi of my name has been read as letter ‘G’ of English”, he explained. |
