Campaign to curb violence against women launched
New Delhi, November 24 "One Billion Rising Campaign", seeking to build a public opinion against violence which victimizes women, was launched here. In her keynote address, Member, Planning Commission, Syeda Hameed said, "We are not just battling silence but the indifference bordering on apathy. Let the One Billion Rising Campaign resonate in those very spaces which matter." According to the United Nations, one in three women in the world experience assault and violence in their lifetime; that's one billion women worldwide. At the launch, the Minister of Women and Child Development, Delhi, Kiran Walia extended solidarity by partnering with the women's collectives in flagging off the campaign. National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) 2011 indicated that the incidence of rape had increased by 873 per cent between 1953 and 2011--a rate three times faster than all the cognizable crimes put together. The campaign jointly launched by a coalition of 25 organizations marked the event held at Jamia Millia Islamia University today, honouring the grit and determination of survivors of violence drawn from women's collectives from across over 30 settlements as far-flung as Bawana in northwest Delhi, Janata Mazdoor Colony, Sunlight Colony in East, Dakshinpuri and Madanpur Khadar in the South to Nangal Raya in the West. This includes groups representing women vendors of Janpath and Sarojini Nagar Market, Dalit movement, sexuality rights, disability rights, unorganized workers and religious minorities and frontline women's organizations. "Even as our hopes get kindled and we feel proud to lead this campaign, we realize that the silence is far from broken" asserted Imrana from Bawana. Vinod, 18, representing young boys and men, was emphatic that violence against women "was as much a problem of men as of women". Representing the dalit women's movement, Vimal Thorat said violence faced by women was compounded by their caste with dalit women being increasingly victimized. The One Billion Rising Campaign is picking up momentum in more than 15 states. Women's groups, civil society groups, men's organisations and groups working for dalit, disability and sexuality rights are all part of this campaign. They are mobilising to ensure that effective measures are taken to prevent violence against women, ensure justice to survivors of violence and support the empowerment of women and girls. |

Floating stones draw visitors to Haryana pavilion
New Delhi, November 24 What was fascinating was to see how people queued up around stalls displaying floating stones, known as pumice, apparently of rare types found only at Rameshwaram in India and Turkey. On the 4th floor of the pavilion, these floating stones seemed to be drawing crowds. They remind the viewers of an episode of the Ramayana, when the stones floated on the sea, making a bridge to reach Lanka. A representative explains that the chemical name of this stone is pumice. Its density is less than water, therefore it floats water. It has holes and water does not get absorbed in the stone. He picks up a stone and says, "It is a flexible stone. He presses the stone on one corner and it bends. This stone is available in the Charkhi Dadri area of Haryana." He then shows a stone named Chalcopyrite, which has copper and gold particles in it. He shows a number of other stones also, one containing chrome and silver, the other rock phosphate. |
